Both O&N and Flint make auxiliary fuel tanks for 172s.
O&N:
http://www.onaircraft.com/products-serv ... uel-tanks/ STC: ???? O&N's is a clone of the original factory option in older 172s, which puts an 18 gallon tank in the baggage compartment, which fills the right wing tank. That raises the floor of the baggage compartment and takes up a lot of its space, as well as changes the CG as fuel is transferred. According to O&N, the procedure is to run out about a third of the right wing tank's fuel, and then turn on the auxiliary tank's pump, and pump it into the right wing tank at just about the same rate as the engine is burning it.
Flint Aero:
http://flintaero.com/kits/internal-tip-tanks/165-2/ STC: SA1614WE Flint puts a 12 gallon tip tank inside each wing, which pumps into the adjacent OEM tank. According to Flint, the procedure is to run out at least 15 gallons from an OEM tank, switch to the other OEM tank, and then pump from the tip tank adjacent to the OEM tank which has been emptied. Other than lowering useful load, Flint says that there are no performance changes.
