Modification index for Cessna 172

I've added another partial article to the stable of aircraft in the Knowledge Base.

http://www.backcountrypilot.org/knowledge-base/aircraft/168-cessna-172-skyhawk

There are a million mods for the 172, but my contribution is making the page look good. 172 guys, chime in with your favorite backcountry mods in this format:

Modification name, STC number and link to the FAA database, STC holder and website

Thanks!

Re: Modification index for Cessna 172

I see you listed the Wing-X extensions for the 172. You may want to make a note that this is a Canadian STC and not approved in the states... Unless something has recently changed which I'd be happy to hear.

It's just a copy of the Skywagon version of this page. I quickly removed the ones I thought weren't applicable to the 172, so I'll remove the Wing-X one too.

Re: Modification index for Cessna 172

Both O&N and Flint make auxiliary fuel tanks for 172s.

O&N: http://www.onaircraft.com/products-serv ... uel-tanks/ STC: ???? O&N's is a clone of the original factory option in older 172s, which puts an 18 gallon tank in the baggage compartment, which fills the right wing tank. That raises the floor of the baggage compartment and takes up a lot of its space, as well as changes the CG as fuel is transferred. According to O&N, the procedure is to run out about a third of the right wing tank's fuel, and then turn on the auxiliary tank's pump, and pump it into the right wing tank at just about the same rate as the engine is burning it.

Flint Aero: http://flintaero.com/kits/internal-tip-tanks/165-2/ STC: SA1614WE Flint puts a 12 gallon tip tank inside each wing, which pumps into the adjacent OEM tank. According to Flint, the procedure is to run out at least 15 gallons from an OEM tank, switch to the other OEM tank, and then pump from the tip tank adjacent to the OEM tank which has been emptied. Other than lowering useful load, Flint says that there are no performance changes.

These have been added.

What's the consensus on the aux tanks, Cary? Do you actually have those installed?

This blue one has an extra fuselage tank installed. Filler cap on the right side.

Re: Modification index for Cessna 172

Finally got the nerve to call Del-Air this evening. Been afraid no one would answer.

Chris ? has apparently ended up with the business somehow.
Just got off the phone with him.

They do several STCs for 170s and 172s. Chris said that their Extended Range tanks and the Long Range Tanks fit 172s up to 1985. The Extended Range Tanks are equivalent to the 175 tanks

I have stated my preference for the Del-Air tanks several times. No wiring. No pumping. No added weight outboard the strut. No gas in the back seat, etc. You only have to re-calibrate the fuel guage on the first fill up.

Del-Air – 2121 S Wild Cat Way – Porterville, Ca 93257 holds SA5433SW for installation of a 180 HP Lycoming engine in 170 and 172 aircraft.

They also have an increased weight STC

I have asked him to e-mail me a list.

Hope it helps.

Chris C.

PS: I need a new avatar as I have sold my 170.

Re: Modification index for Cessna 172

The FAA has a comprehensive listing of STCs on its website. http://rgl.faa.gov/Regulatory_and_Guidance_Library/rgSTC.nsf/MainFrame?OpenFrameSet

Del-Air also has a baggage door STC for earlier model 172s.

I'm not reinventing the wheel. That is a useful and comprehensive database, with thousands of STCs for the 172 alone, which is why I link out to it for STC specifics from all of our aircraft modification pages. But what if you're a a new 172 owner and you're looking for stuff to make it a little better for rough strips, or you just want to make some mods and you fancy yourself into backcountry flying? You probably start a forum thread here asking about it. That's what these knowledge base pages are-- the recommended backcountry mods for any given aircraft, with specifics on how to find more information about them.

Re: Modification index for Cessna 172

Could you leave the wing extensions up for us Canadians. That mod comes with a 400lb upgrade to the gross weight. In my opinion this is the single biggest performance upgrade you can make to a stock 172.

Harry Dellicker was the "Del" in DelAir, very knowledgeable (and quite the talker) but he paased away several years ago :| . I believe his son runs the place now, that might be the Chris you spoke to.

You are correct, only the 180hp get the upgraded GW.
