Re: Mooney short field landing and 180 go around.

That was a skid, rather than a slip, in the Mooney to kill some speed and altitude. Good job. We used to use the same technique in the AH1-G Cobra to get slow without putting the tail boom into something.

Of course, Bryan cheats. He has more skill in his little finger than most of us have in our whole hands. :)

Cessna guy made a nice save there. I was really rooting for him!

Slick airplanes with small or no tires can accelerate rapidly in low ground effect and develop zoom reserve in the form of airspeed quickly. Rapid transitions result from good energy management. Energy management is far more than just pushing the throttle in.

Looked like Bryan got his gear pulled up about the instant he broke ground - I can imagine many pilots not feeling comfortable doing it so soon, but it sure seems like it helps the acceleration you're talking about.

Yeah, but yikes. Could have gotten ugly.

Did Cessna guy come back? I heard someone yell "who was that?"

Beautiful but, dangerous airfield. If, not prepared!

Cessna's approach appeared high (over the threshold) long (1/3 of runway) and heavy (airspeed looked faster than Vso +5 KTS). Good to see the pilot flying a "Plan B".

Is that the one near Elma?
I can't recall the owner's name but I've met him, nice guy.
He's posted here on BCP before.

Re: Mooney short field landing and 180 go around.

First of all I was slipping, not skidding what you saw was me coming out of it. Don't say I wasn't, cause I was! [-X

Also, Jeff Miller owns Field of dreams. He posts here too. He's an awesome guy loves to have people visit him if they are comfortable with his airstrip. The video was Jeff flying with a guy that he knows, who also owns an airstrip, for the first time in a 180. So talk about being thrown into the fire, first time flying a new airplane (with the owner of course) and it's into a short confined airstrip and a heavier airplane. So can't really give him to much heck. He made a good call on a go around. I'm sure he learned some good stuff from flying it and doing a couple go around's!

This is a great airstrip too, I was a little faster than I usually am. I've been flying approaches at 135kts lately! I went the next day and caught up a little on my slow speed ops! Thanks again Jeff for having us. Also thanks Larry for posting these amazing video's with incredible crisp 4K footage!

Very Nice! What is the elevation? Length of the Strip?

Just Curious,

Nice takeoff PiperPainter... no Mooney Madness PIO when retracting the gear on takeoff. You were too low to have gotten away with the PIO anyway :)

You got antique car "curb feelers" on the bottom of those flaps?

The Facebook page lists it at 1600 feet long.

Re: Mooney short field landing and 180 go around.

Hey Sonny, curb feelers were standard issue on NEW cars in the fifties, not on antiques!
Antiques in the fifties were either too high off the ground or getting chopped up for Saturday night quarter mile dirt track "Hard Top" races. =D>
