Hello all, i got up around 6:30am and soon found this thread  Thanks for not been hard on me, yet. like Gump said now ya'll can start the teasing and make me feel worst then i already do
Well to start things off I did tell my wife that i was going to Nokai Dome and i was going straight there (direct too) she even wrote it down, part of the problem was getting coffee and using the community restroom at the hanger and get the plane out and flying 5 minutes to Animas airpark from La Plata/Durango and getting gas all took long then expected, so i called her after run up to let her now i was going to come home a little later, and she wondered if i was still going, thats were i was alittle wishywashy but still said yea i think so. i never really changed my mind though.

So, i first flew to Nokai dome, easy landing and got out for 45 mins. or so to kick rocks off the run way and enjoy the view. Next i flew to another Camp, about 1-2 mins flight time, this one was X-wind but another nice landing, parked walked around for 20 minutes, enjoying a different view and throw some rock in the river.

So, i got back in start up, run up, all is well, i took off down hill and all is well turned west up the river to check out the water while gaining altitude to get out of the canyon and go home. well, like a dump ass, i some how flipped the key off the BOTH position to one off the single mags about 2 mins after take off  I quickly checked the gauges and all was well but the engine was bogging down and not enjoying more throttle. Needless to say i didn't check the position of the key and thought the engines was going to die.
Instead of landing with no power at all i had to commit to landing some where flat and safe instead of turning and having her quit without a spot in front of me. So i made an easy soft landing on a beach and came to a stop and promply shut the plane down just to relize that the key was half way there after pulling mixture.

Never was there a hard landing, in fact it was nice and soft, well even too soft. Thank lots off practice or God but no flipping or wings touching anything.

I then tryed to dig little paths for the main tires so i could move forward but the plane kept settling deeper. I was running about 18psi in the 8.5x6s which was way to much for sandy landing but i didn't except to land there.

"He's a guy who likes to go places that nobody else can get to," Hamilton said. "He flies into these little tiny backwoods places that aren't even landing strips, just flat spots in the ground. What happened is he landed hard and flipped the plane over. He couldn't fly out, obviously." i don't know where Sue Lindsay from the Rocky Mountain News is getting her info, neither my wife or i spoke with any media. And this statement is so false every time i read it, it gets me more annoyed. I have never landed off airport before!! I have thought about it and read lots about it and asked questions on this site about it but never commited to land on flat spots on the ground.

I now i feel bad because all the media is incorrect about what happened and the land dwellers roll there eyes at GA.
Ok gotta go i will finish the story tonight. Thanks everyone and esp. my friend Gary who i owe big time. Peter

Damn Son...

This is gonna be an expensive way to remember to check the mags if ya got a rough running engine.

But your airplane ain't broke, and you have a couple new tales for the campfire!!!! That's what it's all about.

There are those of us that have taken off on one mag and those of us that will  Like leaving the master on.
I took off on one mag in Texas in a C-152 in the middle of summer. She would not climb above 50 ft. Since then I check carb heat, fuel and mag switch. I left it on one mag during run-up. The other indicator is during leaning, it will peak much hotter than it will on two mags. Don't ask me how I know

Or those of us with pull starters who sit there and crank and crank wondering why it won't start... Who then reach over and turn the key on. Duh....

First, let me say I'm really happy that it all turned out OK for you.

It completely sickens me when I think of all the mis-information these media folks distribute as fact. Where in the world did she come up with that? If I were you motorcitymaule, I'd be writing to her editor and there would be a retraction of her false statements.

You did a good job...something was wrong, you reacted promptly, and the outcome was positive. Don't second guess yourself or what - if the thing to death. You did what you thought was right at the time and walked away.

I'll fly with you.

I'll second the fact that you had a mechanical problem (even if it was self induced, most are BTW) and you were able to land without injury and even without damage to the aircraft.

Nice job and great outcome considering the potential for disaster.

You might ask the paper if they'd like an exclusive on the real story, being they botched the first account so badly. Just a thought... They'll likely tell ya' to pound sand. ;-)

I have used the mag off, pull start method of pre-lube on occasion also. That's my story and I'm stickin' to it...

Just remember that what you say...

Here, to the newspaper, the park rangers, or the insurance company can come back to bite you.

Be careful.

True enough. As I have said before, posting on the net is like renting billboard space, except posting on the net lasts longer and the search engines work much better...

When I read the article I figured it was a load of crap but I thought others might want to see what the media was saying...sorry.

Now that we know your home safe I am headed over to pick up some used airplane parts.

You gotta watch out for those beach bums,

So do you have to haul it out or are you going to take a couple water pumps and spray the beach down til you get it wet enough to take off

Cursed

That camp is bad luck! Did you see the remnants of the plane crash at the end of the runway? The one with melted aluminum on the rocks from the post crash fire? You're not the only one to have bad luck there.

Glad to hear you’re ok!! I hope your wife goes easy on ya!

Pete, good job on the precautionary landing. Glad you & the maule are both OK. So what is the status of your airplane? Did you let some air out of the tires or maybe borrow some bushwheels and fly it out of there, or what? Hope you get her back to the hangar with a minimum of fuss and expense.
