Lake Powell Landing

As an aside, I recently heard the entire story of the Cal Black Memorial/Halls Crossing Airport construction.

The airport used to be near the lake and marina. It was decided that it was too close to people and needed to be moved. Long story short, 16 YEARS and 8 environmental studies, protests that would make Santa Monica residents jealous and no end in site, San Juan County gave Glen Canyon the one finger salute and built this killer airport/runway a whopping 53 ft. outside the Park Service boundry.

And Peter, I for one have learned a lesson from your experience and truly thank you for the candor.

Altitude is Time…. Airspeed is Life!

Crimanently!

Miss a couple days and a novel is written.! :P

Peter, sorry to hear about your misfortune, but dang glad your OK. Glad you Maule wasn't hurt either. But then again, there is planes for sale everyday, life is most valuable.

Wet sand? Cool idea, small pump little weight, harder surface. 8)

Feds? Just have to wait and see. :x I'm sure someone could make a big deal out of nothing by following the book. If not then someone will make some rule to fit the situation and add it to the book. Maybe commen sense will prevail. Fly it out and we all learn a lesson. Have to take it apart and haul it out, we get educated.

Main thing you're safe. :P

Actually, he landed outside the park so he's in good shape with the fed's and as long as he can safely fly it out all would be good.

Perhaps he didn't hear that the lake level was low and he thought he was landing on water? :-k O:)

Yep,

Get a Horizon digital tach and life is good. Warnings of inop mags, etc.

Glad to hear MM is out of danger. Cept from them nasty Ranger guys, of course.

They may make him eat the airplane, then walk out...... .

Good job dealing with a situation that wasn't apparent from the outset, without damage to the PRIMARY airframe.

I like the ABW tire change idea myself...What better excuse could you give your wife on having to have a set of 31's. "It's either a set of ABW's or we have to spend time and money hauling it out on a truck then spend time and money putting it back together honey". Then we'll always have the ABW's later for more back country...... \:D/

I guess I should have said "If he landed outside the park he's in good shape with the fed's."

My mistake...

Motorcity,

First of all, I'm glad to hear that you are ok and congradulations on a successful forced landing (regardless of the cause, the important thing is that you made a decision and flew the plan and not the other way around). I hope you are able fly it out and this becomes just a good story for around the camp fire.

There is one thing that I wanted to mention here that no one else has brought up. Kudos to Zane for this site and to Rob for utilizing it. Sure it is great fun and entertainment, but it also performs a public service. Look how quickly the word got out about a lost fellow aviator. I don't know about the rest of you, but I immediately showed my wife the site (which she is familiar with) and wrote down my login info. I told her that if I am ever overdue, despite the threat of being mocked by the rest of you, she should get on and post what she knows. Gary, you are a good man. Thanks for taking the time to go look.

I told my wife about what happened and it just reinforces for her the decision she made to buy me a PLB for Christmas.

Again, glad to hear it turned out well and can't wait to hear the recovery story.

news release

Park news release. Nice looking Maule.

Park dispatch received a report of missing plane in the Bullfrog area late on the evening of Sunday, April 6th. According to the FAA, the plane had taken off earlier in the day from Durango, Colorado, but failed to return as scheduled. Attempts to find it at known landing strips proved unsuccessful. On the morning of April 7th, the operator of a tour plane reported sighting the plane and pilot on a sandbar in Zahn Bay on the San Juan River. The uninjured pilot was picked up by Classic Helicopter, based in Page, Arizona. The pilot said that he’d made an emergency landing due to equipment failure. He at first attempted to walk out, then returned to the plane and manually activated its emergency locating transmitter. The park and county sheriff’s officer are conducting a joint investigation.

Damn, that's a nice looking M7! Get that guy some loaner bushwheels.

Looks about like my buddy's truck when we decided to drive on the Bonneville Salt Flats in early June one time.

Rob came to me with an N#, a name, and that the pilot was from Michigan. I queried our database for those keywords against email, username, and location. Lucky Petar's name is in his email, so was able to match it to him. His posts in the last few weeks referred to possibly flying in Arizona, so the forum didn't really end up doing much to find him in actuality, but talking about it was fun.

You never know though, maybe someday if someone goes missing, clues to their intended destination may be found here, so tell your loved ones your username...haha.
