Somebody want to make some money? Build a widget that lights an led on the instrument panel if either mag switch is off and the master is on. Then for a little additional money you get the thing that makes the key is in the ignition noise if you leave the master on and the alternator is not on line.

It has been a long, cold winter.....

Besides, Motorcity is payin' me to stir this other shit up so we're not giving him a hard time.

I thought the same thing, thread is about Motorcity and we get side tracked so easily we are letting him completely off the hook.

This thread really went downhill. You guys need to get instant messenger to get that shit out your system. I do like the camo tutu though. Might buy that for Erin.

Now, back to the subject at hand.

Motorcity, how the hell you gonna get that airplane outta there without chopping the wings off and using a barge? What was your rescue plan?

Years ago, a fellow aviator was able to stuff an entire J-3 into the back of an old international scout. The 20 mile trip out on logging roads was nearly as catastrophic for the airframe and wings as the forced landing.

Is the location (ie jursidiction / regulation) a problem or the terrain and surface or both ?

Somebody head down there with about 50 bags of quick-crete and churn it into the sand. :)

Water pumps and spray nozzles work great.

Just make sure you put screens on the inlets so Rump Ranger don't get his gills out of shape.

I just wet it down and take off 8)

Motorcity it worked for awhile but these guys are just too sharp, you still owe me a dollar for trying to keep them off your back.

PS thanks ZANE. lol

This is actually pretty easy, you just block up the plane as it sets, deflate the tires and slide them off. Then you install the BWheel / wheel on with the tires flat and air them up with a pop bottle, CO2 or fix a flat can.
Don't ask me how I know about flats and bwheels

Peter,
Very Glad to see that you handled a difficult situation so well and the training you received stuck with you under stress.
I have been flying for the past 5 years and still find that I am very disciplined with check list on initial take off of the day. However I have to work at doing the same process after stopping somewhere in mid flight plan. Needless to say after your event I will be very conscious of my mag position.
As others have admitted their guilt regarding different errors. I have found myself to hurry through this second take off of the day. Sometimes it is something like forgetting to turn on the portable TCAS or more serious leaving the mixture lean. Whatever the error for me it is not maintaining the deliberate, sequencing of check listed items. Over the past year I have taken an oath to myself to not break this mind set of being deliberate throughout the entire flight. Adding items to the checklist that make sense either learned the hard way or via someone else's admission. I personally would like to commend you for sharing the truth with us all, you more than likely have saved someone's life in the future as you did your own. You certainly got me to thinking about my mistakes. I wish you good fortune in your aircrafts recovery and Godspeed.
Sincerely

I'll step in here in an unofficial capacity and answer since you asked (though I have no idea what the government is going to do in this specific case.) Landing an aircraft in a park service area in the lower 48 (in this case Glen Canyon National Recreation Area) is prohibited by regulation, except for areas specifically opened by special regulation. In Glen Canyon that is Hite and Bullfrog airstrip and the surface of Lake Powell for float planes/amphibs. Note that with his final landing - he perceived a problem/emergency - emergency landings are allowed.
Also Nokai Dome airstrip is on BLM land, not in the recreation area.

The main thing is he is OK.

I didn't see where he said he landed at Nokai Dome or where ever!!!!! I would bet that no one else here saw that either. That would leave the emergency landing as being ok. I think some editing is in order....

The rangers were kind of busy on Sunday evening anyways...

GLEN CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA
Fire Destroys Concessioner Dormitory

Park dispatch received a call regarding a fire in progress at the Wahweap concession employee housing area at 8 p.m. on Sunday, April 6th. Responding firefighters arrived to find Dormitory #1 engulfed in flames. The building housed 21 occupants and 20 were soon accounted for. The missing person, who was unconscious inside the building, was quickly found and rescued by park and city of Page firefighters, taken to Page Hospital for treatment for smoke inhalation, then flown by helicopter to Flagstaff Medical Center. The concessioner, Aramark/Lake Powell Resorts and Marinas, has five dorm buildings at this location. Residents displaced by the fire have been accommodated in other dorms. Park firefighters were supported by the Page and Greenehaven fire departments. The fire has been contained. The cause is unknown and an investigation is being conducted.

I once made a symilar mistake. After my run up I somehow forgot to pit the key back on "both" or I hit it afterwards. I proceded to take off on only one mag but I did not notice anything untill I was in cruise and I was burning about 1.5 gallons per hour more than normal. I began trying to find what was causing the difference and discovered the key in the wrong place. I have been much more cautious ever since.
