Thanks for the input. You folks have a wealth of knowledge and your honest sharing is appreciated. I dislike all the extra weight I currently have up front with the Top Prop. I've been trying to justify getting rid of a perfectly good prop with only 200 hours on it in order to buy one that's even more expensive (the MT). I think all your comments have pushed me past that decision point now. I'll let you know how things work out. Thanks again.

I agree that all the knowledge us appreciated. However, my wife and wallet aren't appreciating it. Haha. On my 180 it would be an honest 30+ lb saving over the 3 blade hartzell top prop. The low Canadian dollar is really screwing my mod plans for this spring though...

Maybe we can work some sort of group buy in a few years? I think I need to start playing the lotto. :)

Re: MT 2 Blade VS. McCauley

EDIT: Had a terrible experience with the plastic propeller...Very happy with the McCauley in hindsight.

Re: MT 2 Blade VS. McCauley

Hey Skaly. Great news on the purchase. My wife won't let me buy one yet, so maybe next year! Haha. Really looking forward to your performance comparison on the Horton vs sportsman. Should be interesting for sure!

Re: MT 2 Blade VS. McCauley

Can't remember if I've asked this: how does a MT respond to being outside all the time? A while back I was looking at MTs but decided since my plane will be outside I should stick with a metal prop.

A couple of the MT props I worked lived outside all the time, or at least most of the year in a couple cases. No negative effects that I could discern. The only thing I could imagine happening would be UV effects on the coatings, but that's easy enough to fix.

The prop blades are sealed in the coatings, so no moisture is going to get inside....

What was the price tag? Were you able to use the same governor?
I'd like to upgrade from my at-minimums 82" C203, and although I'm leaning toward an 88" C203 I'd like to know what an MT would set me back. I got onto the Flight Resources website and asked for a quote for my 180, but it's been a week & I have yet to hear anything back. Kinda disappointing.

12,500 for the 83" 2 blade, same governor is used. Just put one on our 182, smooth as a dream...

Edit: sorry just can't leave words of encouragement for what turned out to be a very disappointing product. McCauley works just fine and is reliable!

I have seen two MT props with the first 6 or 8" at root end of the blades with wrinkled skins.
Both times I asked the owners what was going on. Both replied that their inquiries to MT brought the response that the core had shrunk beneath the skin from dry climate.
Has anyone else experienced this phenomena.
At $12,500 plus shipping plus $1600 paperwork I would want something better than that in a prop.
I really want to get one but these two incidences have me a bit spooked.

John told me that this issue has been addressed by changing a part of the manufacturing process and they haven't had the problem since. He also said that if it ever were to become an issue, it would be remedied via warranty.

$1600 paperwork? Is that for a Maule? Prop, spinner assembly, and paperwork all included from flight resources for the C182

The 2 blade required a field approval for a Maule. So additional expense there.

For model combinations that are STCd, no extra paperwork/expense.

Re: MT 2 Blade VS. McCauley

What starter do you have on your plane?
If it is the ISKRA dump it because ISKRA + MT prop = broken starter adaptor ,it will kickback, that have happened to mine in less than 100 hrs and quite a few of other O 470s.
I bought the old style heavy starter and its good now.

Re: MT 2 Blade VS. McCauley

Moto, I got the energizer starter. Already been through two lightweight skytec starters, neither one lasted longer than 25 hours. Thanks for the tip

Hotrod, actually I've got three props but plan to keep one to hang on the wall. Anyway, the two hanging on the wall right now are both 82" in good condition, ones a C29 others a C66. I'll be posting them for sale on BCP in the near future.

Re: MT 2 Blade VS. McCauley

I've had my MT since May 2010---it was brand new. It still looks like it did when I put it on. On the comment that the wood dried out---I'm curious about that since it is encapsulated in a wrapper so to speak-----nothing coming in or leaving.

Darn computers! Thanks for the response John, I'll try to dredge it up. I suspect the MT's above my paygrade anyway, just wanted to know for sure one way or another. Actually I'm hoping to find a good used 88" C203 that I can just have it gone through and bolt on.
