My mechanic cut the cable with a little left exposed and told me to check it as part of my preflight to be sure it hasn't slipped.

Music to my IA ears!

(By the way, freaking envious of your rig. My skis weigh a ton!)

Re: My SQ-2 mods

Just put the 35's back on last night cause no snow, and I woke up to....snowing. Don't think I'll need to go back to skis from just this snow (but it hasn't stopped yet) but if I do it will be a heck of a lot easier (and cleaner) since I installed these. Brake line quick disconnects.

Re: My SQ-2 mods

A follow up report on the brake line quick disconnects. I just put the SQ2 back on wheels yesterday and when I tested the brake pedals they were hard as a rock. Great product.

Ok I didn't save any weight going from Nagahyde to Kangaroo leather, I knew I wouldn't. But it came out nice and this one won't tear over time.

Looking forward to a report on the Berringer wheels. Curious if your going to be installing Berringer master cylinders too?

Yep, and their parking brake, which the SQ2 currently does not have.

Re: My SQ-2 mods

Finally have time to get the Beringer wheels and brakes installed.

Old stuff off and mocking up to he new stuff.

A spacer is needed for cub gear that the kit doesn't provide. For now we used a three stack of washers which could be left permanently as these bolts are in shear load. But I'll probably call Berringer and get them to send me some spacers if they've got them.

First tire, wheel and caliper mounted. Bearings are sealed ball bearings (how awesome is that) and spin forever. I suspect when I take off outta here for Lake Hood they'll still be spinning half way there. Think of the tire wear savings when I'm gravel bar hoping.

Brake lines aren't hooked up yet, but here is what it looks like on this side.

Tomorrow the other side.

Man, those wheels look cool. Really interesting that Beringer went with keyed disks. I wonder what motivated that design decision. Is this setup lighter than ABIs?

Re: My SQ-2 mods

It is lighter. 4.2 lbs per side.

I suppose they could have floated the brake disc in other ways but simplicity of this design is pretty amazing. And as the brake pads wear the disc moves further into the "keys". The brake pads themselves are a step out of the 1940's in that they are replaced like an automobile, the pad material and the backing plate are changed out as one unit. No riveting needed.

The master cylinders are lighter then what I currently have as well, but I'm adding a parking brake which I don't currently have so that might end up being a wash, which is fine by me. The quality of this kit is amazing. Did you notice the axle nut? How cool is that.

You know, a set of these would fit on the 185. Hmmmm. ;-)

I'm in the process of installing the same setup on my Carbon Cub, I'm anxious to hear how the brakes are going to work?

Re: My SQ-2 mods

8.4lbs is significant! I tried to zoom in on the axle nut but I can't see what is different. Now I'm more curious...so what is it?

Floating the disk like this has been done in the past so I think it is interesting that someone is using it again. I never had any trouble with the Goodyear mechanical disk brakes on my Luscombe, which have a keyed/floating disk and fixed calipar much like this, but the disk retention system was kinda hokey which has caused some problems. Looks like Beringer uses safety wire to retain the disk; simple and effective.

I don't quite follow your thinking. Bolts should rarely ever be in shear if they're torqued to the proper spec, and if they are in shear, that's the worst time to use something like washers as the washers don't provide much support or load transfer. Not saying the washers won't work, I do stuff like that too, but I think your reasoning may be flawed. The theory behind bolted joints is that the bolt is preloaded (torqued) to a high enough value that it never sees shear. The shear is transferred through the friction between the two pieces being bolted together, so the bolt only sees tensile load.

But besides the engineering talk, those wheels/brakes look/sound awesome. Nice to see modern components coming onto airplanes.

Re: My SQ-2 mods

Whee, the dust cap is the axle nut as well.

David, I'm in the process of ordering a spare set of brake pads, I'll let you know the cost as soon as I do.

asa, I'm not an engineer (okay I am one but a software engineer) but I was trying to say exactly what you did. The bolts are not in danger of being snapped in two but rather sheared under hard breaking, I'm still on the hunt for some appropriate spacers (the spacer width can't be larger then the outside diameter of those washers else it sits on top of the bearing retainer snap ring.

And that was our thought too. Modern design components going on an airplane? Say it isn't so.

Got the master cylinders swapped out yesterday (they weigh about an ounce more each then the ones they are replacing). Had to reindex the rudder pedals as the Beringer masters are a bit shorter then the old ones. Also got the parking brake (line lock) installed. Today just need to finish the plumbing and see if I can chase down a cable for the parking brake and she will be ready to fly.

To bad that you didn't have the bushing dimensions when you were here. I'd have spun a set out on the lathe for you.

Re: My SQ-2 mods

Is that Backcountry gear legs? The Beringer wheel/brake should be a straight bolt on to stock type gear. The normal brake torque plate is flat for a bit longer so that could be the issue if Backcountry had a bit larger attachment hub. #-o Get that Beringer guy out of the hot tub and see what he has for ya.

Re: My SQ-2 mods

Finito!

I broke-in the pads/rotors this morning. Even though Beringer assured me the brakes would be a definite improvement over the big Clevelands, I was happy with just the weight savings and getting a parking brake.

But the brakes are a significant improvement as well. And I mean significant. Okay that's not super important on the SQ2 as it's touchdown speed is less then 25mph. Like I said the weight savings and parking brake were primarily what I was after.

Talked with Beringer about the axle spacer and apparently that's not a "cub" thing but rather a SQ2 thing. Cubs shouldn't need a spacer.

The brake master cylinders have no vent, but rather a bellows like seal in the cap that extends as the fluid goes down, you know, that cars have had for 60+ years.

Last thing to install was the parking brake cable. I sourced it locally and the only one they had was anodized red. How cool is that.

Super pleased, and the quality of the kit and parts has to be seen to be believed.

Now to get them to build a baby Bushwheel to match.
