Need some Pelican/bag help

Hey all

Need a larger carry on capable bag and a small cockpit flight bag for work

Be spending some time with me as a pax in a airliner going to and from flying jobs

Was thinking of this pelican, as I don’t really like normal rolley bags

Pelican 1510

Anyone recommend a lid organizer and some dividers?

I’d be living out of this thing for 1-2wks

Going to add this to it

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00JPPWB58/ref=emc_b_5_mob_i

BrightLine Bags, Inc FLEX B4 SWIFT

Figured it’ll hold my headset, iPad, batteries, shades, water jug, flashlight, some jerky etc

At work I’d stow the pelican and have the smaller bag up front with on the side of the seat or something

seems I could add a “j hook” to the pelican handle to carry them together going from the hotel or to the truck

Anyone have any info on the cases or inserts for the pelican?

Thanks!

Re: Need some Pelican/bag help

I used those Pelican cases for work (camera equip) for 20 years, traveling all over the world. Great case, and ideal for delicate gear, but they are really heavy... less than ideal for personal stuff.

I also tried that pilot bag, but returned it as soon as it came. Looked pretty cool in the pics, but in real life, was really poorly constructed. I returned it after a day.

just my .02

Thanks for the reply

The weight isn’t a big factor me, pelican seems like a sure thing

Any options that are similar but better to the brightline?

Have a look at these, a very complete lineup of models and styles. They are the number one choice and used by many flight crews.

How’s the durability on that?

Used one of these back in the day
Not sure it would fit the headset though

Re: Need some Pelican/bag help

The LuggageWorks bag I use for work travel has a sort of exoskeleton frame; it's very durable, look at the Stealth or Executive product line. LuggageWorks sells replacement parts in the event of a component failure and a line of flight bags as well. As for the headset I can't speak to that mine lives in the cockpit, I don't carry it around at all. Since the advent of EFB's I don't even use a flight bag anymore.

Put an empty poly carbonate bag on a scale and they like a 1/3 the weight of a normal bag, plus they take abuse. Costco offers some good ones for road warriors.

For a long time going out to the plane to fly for work, Id just grab my headset and iPad and walk over

New gig I’m going to be gone much longer and flying much longer legs, not always same seat, plane, or crew

Should be a fun adventure

My advice for what its worth, travel light and those Pelican cases are definitely not light.

+1 on the Luggage Works. I spent a couple of decades dragging one and wouldn't consider anything else.

The Stealth 737 bag will fit in most overhead bins, FWIW.

Did some looking, guess size and weight they are actually about the same

I would have thought the fabric one would weigh less

Luggageworks 737
22x14x8 @ 13lbs

Pelican 1510
22x13.8x9 @ 11.9 - 13.6lbs (depending on foam)

Seems both will work on the carry on policy to get to the work plane

Image

What I don’t get is the interior size difference

Luggageworks says it’s 40L which according to google = 2440 cubic inches

The pelican if I’m doing the interior size math right is 1,651.1 cubic inches

How’s one 32% larger than the other when their dimensions are nearly the same?

Just trying to find the best way to haul my crap around lol

If they are close ish in weight I’d 100% get the pelican as it seems stronger and looks better IMO

But if it holds 30% less than the traditional rollers that’s a issue

Re: Need some Pelican/bag help

Just look at how much space is lost in the pelican bag due to the design. All that hard edges going out from the center is the problem, it does make for a smooth inside which makes them great for protecting hard/fragile items but suck from a volume. They are great if you are going into a war zone or some crazy adventure. If they were that good for everyday travel every airline employee would have one. Get a good quality soft side and be happy that it will hold more than one set of skivvies.

Re: Need some Pelican/bag help

KG x two. Luggage works makes a great bag. On only my third one after 23 years of airline use. Pilot bag is up to you. I found the bigger the bag the more crap I carry. I try to keep that bag to a minimum size based on what I need.

By my count it's LuggageWorks for the win at 3/0 with hands-on, real time experience.

Head to any terminal, look for a crew in uniform and they will most likely have a LuggageWorks bag rolling along behind them. =D>

I'll add one final observation for your consideration. The LuggageWorks site offers directly sourced replacement parts menu for many of the wear and tear items. I don't see a similar direct from source means for parts menu on the Pelican site.

I think that’s very cool they offer parts, but it also probably a larger need with fabric roller cases, I’d imagine minus maybe a wheel there’s isn’t anything to wear or tear on a pelican

Airline types are very monkey see monkey do, from seniority and how to make $$ to day to day ops, “standardization” is the word and the way, this isn’t a insult by any means, but it is what it is

So when it comes to stuff like a bag, lacking it being required in a GOM, what I see the 121 guys rocking in the terminal I do take note of, but I don’t think it’s full on testimony on its merits

All that being said

Pelican is a superior in build and durability

But

Its REALLY hard/impossible to look past 30% more stuff in the same exterior size when it comes to the Luggageworks

Think I’ll plan for a 2wk trip, lay it all out folded and stacked and measure, if it’ll fit in the pelican ill go that route, if it’s too much, luggage works it is, which I’m kinda thinking is going to end up the case

Thanks for the info and the luggage works lead
