Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

Interesting concept, but ridiculously heavy for a one-person shelter.

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

20 lbs will get you a 4-person expedition tent ready to go tackle Everest.
I would think that 5 lbs for a solo tent is max.

Totally agreed. The Nemo Hornet sleeps two in 2.5 lbs. A backpacking hammock is a pound or two.

I'm scared to see the rest of your ultralight hiking type gear you fly with. To me the only appealing part of using a hammock while camping (I own one but never use it) would be to minimize gear you're bringing by relying on trees or whatever for the structure. Even then, they are not very light because they are made of materials to support people my size.

Ultralight backpacking shelter that is actually ultralight and very comfortable for 1 person:

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

As a side sleeper, the hammock wins anytime for me over ground sleeping if solo. We have a Hilleberg Namatj 2 GT which makes us very, very happy when it's a two person camping adventure. Tried the Z Packs, for solo, but prefer the Hennesy Hammocks Asym line - it's easy to set up as a structure on the ground with a good stick or hiking pole if there are no trees around, and then you're in the same comfort situation as the Z Packs - but if there's a tree around, you're swaying in the gentle breeze (or torrential downpour, it did just fine next to Patagonian glaciers for me) and loving life.

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

Hammocks tend to be a love 'em or hate 'em proposition for most folks. A proper hammock kit, including under-quilt, over-quilt, rain-tarp and line is about the same bulk and weight and cost as a decent 1-person tent, pad, and sleeping bag. All that together should be about 6 lbs in the summer.

I haven't found any real difference between finding a good place to pitch a hammock verses a flat place to pitch a tent...even with a lot of trees around it's not as easy as you think it'll be. In heavy rain (think cloudburst in the Bob Marshal) a hammock won't flood the way a tent will. With more air circulating around you, hammocks tend to sleep colder than tents...sometimes a good thing, sometimes not. Some people simply cannot sleep comfortably in a hammock, so for them it's a moot point.

The tent-hammock idea is a neat gimmick, but pretty useless for any real consideration. Neither fish nor fowl, with all the disadvantages of both systems, plus heavy as an anvil. I guess if buggy, treeless beaches in a hot climate was your destination it'd be a decent option...but not in a 150.

I sleep better in a hammock than anywhere else, so if I'm solo a extra-long Hennesy is my go-to. For a multi-person shelter I have to cary on my back or in a kayak I never use anything but my Black Diamond Mega-Mid, which is a superb two-person tent, and a acceptable three-person tent, though without a floor it's not ideal in snake country. If it's going to be really buggy I'll take a "normal" tent for airplane camping, but the Mid gets used more often than not in that roll, too.

Seems like the older I get what I want isn't more comfort, it's more simplicity.

+1 for the Megamid. Best all around tent period.

It has two downsides, condensation, and bugs. It also ties nicely to a cessna tie down ring.

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

Easy cowboy, let's holster those pistols right quick. All people are saying is it isn't the most economical use of space and weight in a C150 (I don't recall seeing a folded up size listed) For a few nights by yourself in the 150 that thing would kick ass. Plus you have room under the sling to store your stuff you don't want getting wet. It does seem on the pricier side for what it is, but hell, that's what the market is willing to support.

Everytime a thread like this comes up everyone starts talking about what works for them. They aren't shitting all over your neat new toy. For me personally I'd rather have a huge ass 20 person tent so I can keep everything dry and keep the dogs in with plenty of space under shelter in case of weather. Of course not all planes have the ability to carry 1500lbs of shit, so we have to do what works. I never camp without my wife, so this hammock wouldn't serve my purposes, but there's many others who will.

This is the same thing we see when someone posts a cool new tool and then another guy chimes in showing his new tool he just discovered. In the end, we all win (and end up with $500 in tools I didn't even know I needed) Just take it for what it is.

Now, we're all calmed down and see it from everyone's point of view. You can have your pistols back, I put them over by the tampons in your purse.

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

Peace, brother.

I think you're taking it all a little personal, and unless you're intent was to create buzz for the product, I don't see why.

If you love it, great. Give them some money. I think it's ridiculous, but that's nothing against you.

If there's value in everyone saying "great" and "hope it works" to an idea that they really think should be stillborn, I don't know what it is.

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

Oh the internet and human frailty. More twisted panties.

Thanks for posting the hammock. I would never ever want one, and I think it vaguely ridiculous, but it was interesting to see, and if I ever try to build something similar it gives me ideas of where to start.

Because I don't like it has absolutely nothing to do with your very impressive hiking and aviation resume, nor does it make any reflection on your judgement, it is simply not for me. I am a registered know it all, so even if you had summitted Everest with it would have had zero influence as to whether I liked it or not. I like to make my own choices.

Some of the other posts were off topic, (including mine), but I think they were actually more informative for me. I loved the light weight tent, though spendy. So as a community member your original post (limited interest to me) got responses that were interesting to me.

Enjoy your day.

Sorry, but there is too much contradiction here. Maybe if the OP didn't suggest experience with ultralight equipment, people wouldn't have the need to dispute the claim. 100% of the ultralight hiking community I know would not consider this product in that class of equipment.
lownslow79 wrote: It is what it is and all of you who are debating this to death as to its usefulness, are short sighted in the intent of this post.

Based upon the followup post, I think readers may have more clearly understood the intent of the OP if there had been a link to the product followed by, "you may be interested in this because I found it kinda cool"....PERIOD.

Incidentally, I did follow the link. It is kinda cool. I don't think I will buy one, but clever idea.

Hey OP! Why did you delete your post? I actually digged that concept, totally acceptable carting that in a 150 or any Aircraft or car. I mostly do off country 4x4 trips vs Aircraft since you get better access in most places that don’t have airstrips, plus you have a vehicle when you get there! don’t let the fools fool you, unless maybe your in AK, but even there I’ve been places more accessible by 4x4 than Aircraft. Also Don’t let the local clique-gang here put you down. They only want to hear what there buddy's are shoveling out.

No trees here...and my last experience in a hammock was between two clumps of bamboo...north eastern part of Ratanakiri Province in Cambodia. Frigg’n ants got me!
My airplane tent is four season under 6-1/2 pounds.

Don't we all WISH is was just $500 in tools we didn't know we needed?! #-o

All I know if that it someone ever posts a folding e-bike that will carry 300 lbs, I'm gonna be out a LOT more than $500! [-o<

Seriously. As a 150M owner looking for advice and lightweight gear, I'd have loved to see what he came up with. Anybody still happen to know what hammock he linked to?
