Aw heck, I didn't even get to see what all the hubbub was about! But as the resident glamper (or so I've been called by other BCPers I've camped with), 20 lbs for a one person tent seems a tad excessive. My monster glamping tent (a Big Agnes Big House 4 with vestibule) only weighs 18 lbs. Of course, when you add in my cots and bags and portable toilet and shower tent and stoves and Yeti cooler and all the other stuff I carry, I won't win any awards for light weight. But gawrsh, I'm comfy! And it all fits in my P172D, along with me and my dog.

Seems like there's a combination of thin skin and juvenile prodding in this thread, but what the heck, we're all friends here--and frankly I don't know of any "local clique gang" on BCP. I've found this site to be just about as welcoming and congenial as any on the Internet, a lot more than most--and I don't even take the wheel pants off my airplane! =D>

You can buy commercial versions of this too for a few hundred bucks. A friend had one that worked well enough to make afternoon flights in the midwest tolerable.

I mostly do off country 4x4 trips vs Aircraft since you get better access in most places that don’t have airstrips, plus you have a vehicle when you get there! don’t let the fools fool you, unless maybe your in AK, but even there I’ve been places more accessible by 4x4 than Aircraft. Also Don’t let the local clique-gang here put you down. They only want to hear what there buddy's are shoveling out.

Seriously. As a 150M owner looking for advice and lightweight gear, I'd have loved to see what he came up with. Anybody still happen to know what hammock he linked to?

The link was to a public funding site for a product yet to be produced. Hammocktent or some such thing. It is what it is, but what it isn't is a reasonable shelter for someone trying to camp out of a Cessna 150. Without a sleeping bag and under-quilt it still weighs more than the total sleeping accommodations (including tent) for two people.

The OP got his panties in a wad when it wasn't received with love from people who use their gear more than once a season and can differentiate between a gimmick and a quality tool, and he posted a rather inelegant reply, then deleted it and the original post. Lot of drama over nothing. Maybe he gave money to the cause and wanted other people to jump on the trolly...

If you're interested, google tent-hammock or hammock-tent and see what you get. At the time of the original post it wasn't in production, and I wouldn't pick one up if I won it at a raffle, but that's true for half the things for sale at REI...I'm sure there's a market for it, but ultralight airplane camping isn't one of them.

Don't we all WISH is was just $500 in tools we didn't know we needed?! #-o

All I know if that it someone ever posts a folding e-bike that will carry 300 lbs, I'm gonna be out a LOT more than $500! [-o<

UH OH! I had some clients come in with a couple of these.

They looked pretty cool!

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

Dang, I missed the original post and now it's gone. I've got a bunch of hammocks because I like the idea but none of them have been comfortable enough for me to use in the real world. I've got a lot of useful load in my Maule so don't really worry about weight. Most of my airplane camping is solo so I even take an espresso machine on my camping trips because I can. I'm curious about what the arrangement was. I guess I'll do some searching on my own and see what I find. The other hammocks stored in my camping closet could use some company even if I don't wind up using another hammock for my soft core Backcountry experiences.

That folding electric bike looks pretty cool, and their website has some awesome google translation going for it--

"Motan M150 will be the perfect all-rounder to complete your life. This bike with its powerful 500 Watt motor and the long-lasting Battery make sure that you will have plenty of fun riding it every day.
No matter what you intend to use it for. The ride to work, a weekend trip or a ride through the countryside with many uneven are no problem for the M150. Even the annual seasons cannot stop it. It is suitable for summer and winter alike. Many bikes can’t be ridden in snow in winter or on the sand on the beach.
The Motan M150 beats them all. You will see, once you got on this bike you never want to have another one."

Experience is what you get when you didn't get what you wanted.

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

I wonder if any of our engineer folks out there could copy the frame and create a carbon fiber pole version. That would probably greatly reduce the weight. I suspect the poles are either steel or heavy duty aluminum creating the majority of the weight issue.

How to make a hammock or a tent more complicated.... hmmm.... I know, mash the two together! #-o Just kidding!

I am like Flyhound, I love the hammock idea and have bought one and tried it in different seasons. I think it only makes sense in certain circumstances i.e. when there is a shortage of dry, flat ground where you want to sleep. Great for some kinds of hunting, not normally the case where you find airstrips.

Pretty complex and intriguing product. I can see the fascination.

Just needed to delete the word "lightweight" from the title, otherwise the post was all good.

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

When I was in the Army, we spent a lot of time "camping" in the desert. Those canvas tents were like ovens! I had previously lived in Brazil, and spent a lot of time sleeping in hammocks. (Not the stupid things with poles across the ends - those aren't hammocks, they are torture devices!) I found a hammock made of nylon cord, woven together like a fishing net. It weighed next to nothing, and when unfurled was plenty big and incredibly strong. I learned to sling the hammock between cargo tie-down hooks on the 2 1/2 ton truck that carried our supplies to the field. Laying in the hammock on the shady side of the truck, under the camo netting was quite a bit more comfortable than inside the canvas tent on a cot. And yes, an awful lot of the sleeping was done during the day (when it was nice and hot), because most of our operations were done at night. I later found out that our maintenance guys were renting out my hammock when I was off flying... I thought that was pretty ingenious of them!

I'd love to be able to hammock-camp like that today, but rarely have the opportunity to camp next to a 2 1/2 ton truck! :^o The bigger problem around here is that trees are few and far between, so it's tough to find a place to hang the hammock. This hammock/tent thing – other than being so heavy – has given me an idea to pursue... Now to find a way to simplify and add lightness... :D

Keep searching and let me know if you figure something out!

I love hammock camping but have had similar issues with finding trees. A wing is perfect for shade/rain cover. Just need something to support the hammock.

Just take a heavy, steel hammock stand like you'd use in the back yard to a good welder or maybe a bike builder and have them make a break-down version out of titanium tubing. Won't be cheap, but we're pilots, so price is of no concern...

Re: New lightweight camping hammock/tent 20lbs

I hang a hammock chair from the tie-down of my airplane's wing, and it's super comfortable for daytime naps. In fact, it's really a problem causer, because I can fall asleep too easily in it! When camped at OSH, I've had several people wake me to ask about it! I bought a tripod to use it on non-airplane camping trips, and last year at OSH (when I drove instead of flew), I took several short naps under the tripod. Same thing--being awakened by people to ask about it. But it's not what I would choose to sleep in all night.

I saw a guy a few years back with a hammock supported between the prop hubs on a DC-3 and he was sleeping in the shade under the fuse. No trees needed..... lol...
