NY to LA - a grand adventure

This post probably belongs in ownership or trip planning but since it fits both, Ill put it here.

I finally pulled the trigger. After about a three year research process which took me from 108s to Pacers to 170s back to pacers to M-4s and so on I finally did it. I wanted something with the climb of a SuperCub, doors of a Maule, manners of a 108, sex appeal of a 170, power of a 180, speed of a Mooney and fuel burn of an S-7.
Its often said that every airplane is a compromise of some sort and for my current station in life the Pacer is the best combination of all those things as long as I slid the similarity bar to the left a ways. Additionally, price of admission, cost of care and feeding, insurance, and availability weighed heavily. I searched to the ends of the interweb and after seeing footage of Highroad's Pacer and the so-called "Pie Chaser" from some dudes down under as well as many others I was satisfied that in the right hands and properly equipped this little bird can flat get it done.

Once that was decided, I started the search for the right one. As well equipped, well taken care of, undamaged, with the lowest time I could find. Show queens, repos, half owned, rotten fabric hurricane salvages need not apply.

In the end, I decided on 05A, an A&P owned 1957 PA-22/20-150 with 35 SMOH, good fabric, decent paint, and IFR equipped. Other highlights include a climb prop, sealed struts, Madras tips, a full skylight, shoulder harnesses, Federal 2500 straight skis, Aero tail ski, 8.5x6 tires, auto fuel STC and spin on oil filter.
The only catch is that this specimen is no fewer than 2047nm away. This would likely have deterred me had I not followed Troy Hamon's journey to take delivery of The Island Girl.

I sniffed around to learn how to do it right on a long distance deal, and ultimately questioned the owner, his IA and had a very detailed pre-buy performed by another IA who had no prior contact with the plane or it's owner. An offer was made, a little haggling ensued, and I ultimately wound up paying asking price but with the addition of the skis which the owner was asking $3500 for. Maybe it's just to make myself feel better, but by my math with the addition of the skis to the deal at no added cost, I like to look at it like I talked him down $3500 :)

I enlisted the services of Suzanne at AIC title/escrow co. and went full Monte with title search as well as title insurance. The paperwork was handled, the details came through and the deal was closed.
I have since had a thorough annual completed and since the plane hasn't flown for a number of years, hired a CFI local to the plane to put a few hours on the bird as a "confidence flight"

On May 7th (my birthday), I'll fly commercial to Syracuse, NY, drive up to Fulton, NY and pick up the bird to begin the journey home to Oxnard, Ca. My sister, also a pilot in the early stages of IFR training like myself will be coming along as my safety pilot for another set of eyes, somebody to talk to, and a consistent sanity check to keep me honest.

I've gathered a considerable collection of gear including just in case items like safety wire/pliers, zip ties, TP, and Flyties which will hopefully arrive before my trip.

Our planned route of flight will include overnights at:
Graham farm, OH-(hopefully) to camp and grip&grin w/ Crzyivan13,Wyomingiswindy,Patrolguy. Those guys have been a big inspiration.
Polo, MO-to spend a night with some family
SEDONA, AZ-to hook up with an old Navy buddy

Fuel stops between the above mentioned stops will be based largely on straight lines and reasonable fuel prices in addition to any recommendations you all may have as to where to stop or not.

I'll try to keep this post updated as a trip report for those interested.

Here are a few pics taken by the previous owner of our chariot.

Re: NY to LA - a grand adventure

Congratulations on your new bird!

I wish you a fabulous trip back home and I know it will be memorable.

Sometimes you have to travel to acquire the one that was meant for you. I did this last year flying my new plane from north of San Diego to New Hampshire and I had the time of my life.

Please document the trip with LOTS of pictures!

Great write up. Can't wait to see your trip report. Savor every detail of your trip. Flying from DC to Wyoming to bring my plane home is one of the most memorable experiences I've ever had.

Wishing you tailwinds, but not so many that the trip goes by too fast.

Re: NY to LA - a grand adventure

I bought my last crane in Tampa Florida, because it was exactly what I was looking for, at the right price. Plus.....I had a ball driving it cross country. I understand flying cross country is even more fun, have a great trip. =D>

Looks like a great choice, congrats. If you happen to stop by Albuquerque (KAEG) could possibly provide hangar space and a couple of beds.

nice looking pacer... best of luck and a safe trip... have no idea where you are stopping... airport identifiers mean nothing to most of us...and it's too much trouble to look them up...

What day are you planning to depart? If timing and weather cooperates I'll fly down from Schroon Lake (4B7) to see you off.

Those are all the same planes I was considering when I was buying my first plane. It looks like you got a nice Pacer and I'm sure you'll enjoy it!

Re: NY to LA - a grand adventure

Thanks for the many compliments guys, I'm pretty stoked about it.
I'll take as many pics as I can and keep this thread updated.

-Fshaw- I'm aiming for an early afternoon departure May 8th from FZY but that could pretty easily slide to early morning May 9th pending WX, MX, or......
-Magnet- I may well take you up on that depending on how the days conspire with or against me.
-Soy- thank you for the offer, I plan to stay a ways further south but will keep that in my pocket
-Robw56- yeah it made things easier since most of the pertainant questions have already been asked. It also made things harder since the planes in the class are so similarly capable and there aren't a lot of cut and dried deciding factors. Your write up on the Sportsman kit had me very firmly decided on a 170B for quite a while.

Will post some pics of all the crap I'm taking with me once I get it all together.

Re: NY to LA - a grand adventure

I see you're in Camarillo. Although I now fly the Rans S7, I purchased a Flight Design CTSW about 4-5 years ago in Northern California. Flew down the coast and had to stop at Camarillo due to weather. Winds were about 35 knots from the west and I initially called in to Point Mugu not realizing it was a military base but the wind appeared to line up with one of their runways. They discouraged me so I headed for Camarillo and landed (the 2nd attempt) with a very strong xwind. Probably the worst winds I have been in, even difficult to secure the plane and walk to the terminal. Had a great lunch though. Was able to get out the following morning but only as far as Santa Barbara, again due to weather. Great experience but happy that it's behind me.

Re: NY to LA - a grand adventure

Congrats.

I bought my Pacer in August of 2012. I live in Oregon and purchased the plane outside of Atlanta. Great 2 day adventure and my second long US cross country. In 2007 I bought my first plane (a Cessna 150) and flew it from Virginia to Oregon. I enjoyed the 2nd trip much better with a much more powerful plane.

Best of luck!

Re: NY to LA - a grand adventure

Sounds like me years ago, only in reverse. I bought a Maule, sight unseen in Troutdale and flew it back to RI. Second day , when I stopped for fuel the fellow at the pumps asked me how I liked my Maule. I said good so far. I've owned it for 12 hours. He said " where'd you buy it?" I said TRD, he said " where you headed?" I said RI. He said" That's east of here ain't it ? Long way too. Could you have bought one any further from home?" it was the best trip ever. Hope you have as much fun as me. Good luck, don't rush, savor every minute.
