O-470 R Large oil cooler
Lycoming, Continental, Hartzell, McCauley, or any broad spectrum drive system component used on multiple type.
What are your oil temp readings more or less?

Our pponked O-470R seems to run mid green on oil temp. To be fair we haven’t yet run it at high OAT and high power climb settings. It does have the larger oil cooler.
Oil pressure runs above the green but the engine shop said they set them high on purpose.

I’ve flown a ‘56 C180 on average 15-20 hours a week for the last two years in far West Texas in temps ranging from -5 F to 115 F OAT on low level pipeline patrol. I’m running a O 470K with the big cooler.
On the hottest days of summer running at my patrol average of 21”MP and 2350 RPM the hottest Oil Temp I have ever seen is 220 F.
Summer usually runs from 180-200F oil temp on average days 85-100F OAT
In the winter I have to tape off the cooler to get it to 180F.
It’s never wavered in almost 1600 hours.

Thx both for the info.
180-200 looks perfect to get rid of humidity. Lucky you.
Mine stays around 165 in cruise, wonder if the temp control valve is not actuating correctly and is letting oil flow through the cooler ahead of time.
Flow Thermostat/valve labeled 173 deg F, need to check it.... Engine has only some 60hrs since Reman.

My 470R ran at 155 in almost all conditions. I just put a new -50 on and it runs at 148. Too cool in both cases. I want to see 180-190. Following this thread for sure. It could be the vernatherm.

What temp is labeled on your vernatherm?
I put today some aluminum tape to the oil cooler and covered about 25% of its front.
Lets see what temps I get on the next flight.

My 520d usually runs 165 in cruise. Don’t forget that the oil temp sensor is right after the cooler, so that’s the coldest the oil is in the system. The oil that is splashing on the bottom of the pistons is still getting plenty warm enough to boil off water vapor. I installed a sump temp probe in one of the drain plugs just because (actually because I had an erroneous oil temp reading once, so I figured having a secondary temp sensor couldn’t hurt). As a reference the oil in my sump is 20-30 degrees warmer than the official oil temp.

What I have been told by Continental and an oil cooler manufacturer is that one should have at least 180 deg at the outlet of the cooler (Ind. Temp.) in order get well rid of the moisture.
Believe to have seen a table with temps and times.
Thx for your interesting delta temps that you got, had read of 40-50 but do not know the exact location of the second probe for those numbers.

Shop did a nice aluminum plate covering maybe 25/100 of the cooler.
Oil temp now around 180 in cruise.
Case solved.
