Ozark Flying

Hey All,

I'm now in Topeka, KS, and flying Idaho is well outside my normal weekend abilities. I've been doing some homework about the Ozarks, and was wondering if anyone was planning any upcoming group trips or fly-ins, or just does impromptu trips around the area and wouldn't mind a 182 that's going through mountain flying withdrawls tagging along?

Keep your eyes open for a Rocktober STOL thread I'll be starting soon. It's exactly what you are looking for only way beyond your expectations. Oct 24,25,26,27.

Re: Ozark Flying

It's a world away from me, but from what I recall people talking about here, two destinations come to mind:

Gaston's Resort: https://www.google.com/search?aq=f&sour ... ypilot.org

Trigger Gap: https://backcountrypilot.org/forum/i-th ... -gem-21969

Maybe those threads will turn you onto some usernames who are in that area.

Re: Ozark Flying

Check out this website. While it's a national database of great airstrips (most are dirt/grass in some sort of interesting location), it is heavily focussed on the Ozarks. Lot's of private strips that the owners are open to visitors!

https://airfield.guide

Just looking through the strips in that database makes me want to do an Ozark run!

That sounds like a plan. Kingsley, down by Springfield?

Yes, Kingsley's. They have fuel and a nice restaurant. They have an Ag school and there is a skydiving outfit on the field. Pattern is about 400' AGL and a quarter mile for students and on the weekend the jumpers land east of the N-S runway. Many have no radio. Use eyes not electronics and radio to get in safely. During spray season park south of the Hangar Kafe. Big bright sign and wind sock and indicator on south side of fairly new quanset.

Re: Ozark Flying

Had a long, low (300-500’ in crap weather) and slow flight from West Memphis to Springfield a couple months back. Went by the Chateau Pensmore and wondered how big a moonshine still could be inside. Worried that at my altitude I’d catch buckshot from the meth labs. Might get back down there and explore some more next month. Play a little Choctaw bingo.

FBO in Springfield had a coffee table made out of a Piper Tomahawk wing, that was cool.

Re: Ozark Flying

Try Beaumont, KS, 07S for a novelty. Grass strip then taxi down the street and tie down across from the hotel. Popular breakfast spot in the summer for motorcycles. Could be closed with X's after a good rain, even with no notams.

Re: Ozark Flying

As a fellow Kansan I feel your pain!

Check out Byrd's Adventure Center just north of Ozark - 51AR on the map I believe. They have a spring and fall fly in where weather permitting they venture out to small private strips in the area with different features. Byrd's itself is great place to spend the weekend - pay attention to their Facebook event calendar as they have a variety of different activities going on during the in season weekends.

Byrd's is great. We have a group trying to camp at Trigger of Byrd's in March.

Joewcasey,

Re: Ozark Flying

Would that event be something I would enjoy if I rode a bike to it instead of flying in?... Is there somewhere I could get more info about the activities?

I’ve not been around these planes much, but I’m working on getting my first taildragger lesson in a 180hp cub... A Cirrus doesn’t seem to be the way to get in or out of grass strips, so I’d be camping off a bike or dropping in for a bit via a car.

Thanks,
Dan
