P206A mummy restoration

Well, it's all official and money has changed hands. Even got the plane home! I am the owner of a new to me 1966 P206A. I really wanted a P model so my wife has a door to get in and out of. The plane was imported in 2004, and has sat since 2008. Cracked crank caused a engine failure. He was going to get it rebuilt, but then got out of commercial ops. It has the Bonaire IO-550 conversion. Did not come with an engine or prop though. I have lots of plans for it, and it's going to be a super fun build. I plan on a maybe 2 or 3 year timeline. It's a nice straight and clean airframe. Very little corrosion. Rear carry thru spar needs replacing. It was parked in just a way the caused the LH side to corrode outboard of the fuselage. Other than that, there's no sheet metal work needed beside a sportsman stol install. Plane also came with a belly pod.
Anywho, I have some pictures of what it looks like and the hauling home process. I had the tail all dismantled the first night and the wings just had to come off and be loaded on day 2 when Josef arrived. We used the pickup as our 3rd man for the wings. We put the fuselage on one trailer and wings on another. Elevators are in the plane. Struts and rudder in the pickup, vertical stab and 6 seats in the expedition with me. Belly pod strapped to my roof.
My wife is not too sure about the swing up jump door. I think it will be awesome for loading stuff and for the aerial drops that I do. Interior is stripped. I need to get rid of the black goo though. The aluminum side panels that the jump club installed will be taken off and I'll go the utility interior route. Panel is nice and plain, and will be fairly easy to redo. Thinking about installing a float kit, but not sure what there is for options for them.
I'll keep this updated as progress commences, but again, it won't be a fast process. Open to any helpful tips!

Thanks!

Re: P206A mummy restoration

Sounds like another good story to follow - Learn to love the PROCESS.
There was a few years of Turbo 206's with vapor lock problems due to fuel line routing - but was fixable I believe.

Take your time
Measure multiple times
Cut close
Trim to ffit
Do it once,
Take care
Be safe

Good for you!

I need to get rid of the black goo though
Hours of fun! Plenty of time to spend bonding with your new plane =D> =D> =D>
It's a long, tiring, messy process, but you will be glad you made the effort. It helped for me to only work on that for an hour or so at a time, then work on something else, i didn't hate the thought of going back to it next time as i did after the times i had spent hours at a time working on it.

It will be fun to watch the process.

Re: P206A mummy restoration

Okay, I'll be the turd in the soup, so to speak. Why would you even want to remove that black goo? A couple of thoughts:

1. If you install something like foam insulation over top of it, you'll never see the stuff....so why bother?

2. If you use chemicals to remove the stuff, it's going to be REALLY tough to keep from getting some of that stripper into the belly of the plane. Do you really want stripper laying in the belly of your plane? Think corrosion. There's no way I'd allow me inside my airplane with a bucket of stripper..... #-o

3. Removing it right is one hell of a job. Is there corrosion under it that you're worried about? Because, once you remove it, you've exposed the metal to the atmosphere.....so now you paint the interior. Again, if you're going to insulate, why bother?sf

But, it's your airplane, and your time. Me, I'd cover that black snot with insulation and go flying.

Hey Mike. I've thought of this, but I want t paint it anyways. Need to do something with all the stringers and bulkheads. So getting rid of all the black goo is a lot of work, but taping it all off to paint everything else is lots of work too. So I'd rather just take it all back down to bare, clean the belly and all, then paint it.

Thanks for all the congrats. I really am looking forward to it.

Re: P206A mummy restoration

We found that the black snot keeps the skins quieter for very little weight. Is that the same as a 205 with the cargo door on the pilots side?

Re: P206A mummy restoration

That aft bulkhead in the tail section is cracked on nearly every one of those. There is a heavy duty one now, I don't have the part number. Something to check that often times goes unnoticed.

Congratulations. Good hauler.

Yes yoy are right. Cargo door on pilot side, and has a passenger side front door.

Re: P206A mummy restoration

I know that its all the rage these days to have a striped painted interior. Something to think about. Do you really not want to have a liner of some kind to protect the skins from cargo damage? Especialy a hauler like the 206? Also paxs leaning against the sidewalls will find it quite cold. I agree with Mike. All the work stripping for what? Cover it with some protection of some kind (Kydex or a Selkirk inerior) and spend your time elseware.

It won't be totally bare. I'll have Selkirk closed cell foam on it. I hate plastic/fibreglass interiors that are broken and look like crap from just being brittle.
