Um, that doesn't look good! Corroded carry through spar? I hope I'm just thinking the worst, and that this isn't the case.

Yup. Some exfoliation on the bottom L/H side.

Will it clean up, or are you looking for a replacement?

Re: P206A mummy restoration

Well, plane spent all winter parked in the shed out back. hardly had time to look at it, let alone work on it. Working on painting a scout and then covering super cub wings here next. Then fix a 210 belly. Then a slew of annuals. but hoping to squeeze the 206 in there somewhere. We decided we are just going to have a flying project for now, so I made a deal on a 19hr IO-520. It was rebuilt in the early 2000s, but its been in dry country and looks good. Need to get it home and convert it over to an A model. Have 2 good prop options right now, just need to decide which one to buy... decisions decisions.
Not much of an update, but it is progress!

Oh, and rumor has it that I came into possession of a set of 29s for a very very reasonable price... was going to be for a customer, but I think it was too good a deal and they'd look soooo good on the 206 for some flights...

Cool.

Who has an STC for installing an IO 520 F model in the P206?

Got me there. Same engine just different rpm. It will be an A model.
I could go with the Vitatoe STC which would allow me 300HP with their cross flow cylinders. But that's more of an upgrade at O/H thing I think. For what I'll be doing with this plane the 520 should be fine as is.

Re: P206A mummy restoration

I got a couple PMs about shoulder belt attach points and whether Cessna had installed them in my plane. They actually installed nurplates for the center row as well as the rear row. There is a 3rd one in the center between the center row seats. Maybe for a cargo net attach point? Here are a couple pictures for those that asked. Hope they help.

Re: P206A mummy restoration

Well, finally making some progress. Got th engine compartment all cleaned up and inspected. No cracks at all, but a few loose rivets that will get tightened up. Stripped the panel and interior panels. Started on the black goo and am happy to say that it's coming much easier then I expected. I'm using a product called "Goo Gone". Spray it on and let it soak then scrape off with a plastic scraper. Then repeat. Working very well and with minimal effort.
Panel needs a bit of work. I'm going to make I flush at just to the right of the radio stack. Very minor alteration to accomplish that. Then just make a blank panel to cover all those holes, as nothing will end up over there. Going to go with a fairly basic panel setup, center mount my 796 with a single comm and transponder below. Planning a JPI900 right now. Still torn. Would really like a Dynon Skyview, but that will require an LSTC. Might make some calls, but we'll see...
Getting a rush of customer planes again soon, so progress will be slow. But gotta pay the bills to!

Re: P206A mummy restoration

Making a bit more progress. Unashamedly stealing Greg and Matt's utility interior look. I really like it, and more importantly the wife really does as well. Found a new RH door as she wasn't real keen on the jump door that was there.
Also working on new panels. I'm going to wrap them with carbon fiber wrap. Did my sub panel up that way and I really like the look. I'm hoping a local sign shop can print onto it. Be a cleaner look then using a label maker for the CBs and placards.
All new control cables are pulled in the fuselage. Wings will probably go on shortly into the new year.
Found a nice IO-520D with 17hrs SMOH on it and have converted it over to an A/F. New Millenium cylinders on it. Very nice and clean inside with no corrosion. So its mounted in. The FWF has all new wiring now. All wiring in the plane will be replaced.
Progress is slow, but is happening!ImageImageImage

Re: P206A mummy restoration

Nice work. I am restoring a U206F and will be putting the wings on this Friday. I now see how the Selkirk foam fits in, I have that to do over Xmas. Good Job. Did you use something like Scotch Weld 1357 to glue it up? I'm not going to the trouble of painting the interior, as it's primer is good and I'm recovering sidewalls, using alot of Selkirk plastics, Airtex headliner and SCS vinyl floor.

Did you NDT the tail or install any of the Cessna upgrade kits (SK210-125 or 126) .... I just NDT'd everything. Will all the IO-550 Baffles work with the IO-520?

Regards,

William

Re: P206A mummy restoration

I'll NDT them, but not expecting to find any issues. I'll also go up to the next bolt size as allowed.
As for the foam, the first stuff I used 3M Super 77 spray adhesive. Sprayed the backside of the foam and the plane and glued it in. Then I bought some sticky backed stuff from Spruce so I've been spraying Super 77 on the plane and then sticking the foam on. It's working very well. I am using 3/8" stuff.
I'm hoping the baffles fit. I'll start fitting them next week. Otherwise I'll have to get some new ones.

Looking good! I really love the look of that foam interior.

I'm a big fan of the flying project, glad you found an engine.

Your Selkirk foam panels look great. You could always change your mind and cover it up at some point down the road. Thanks for sharing. Keep the pics coming.
Wondering how you made out with that carry thru spar. Were you able to save it?

Hey Ron. Thanks. Ya I'm thinking if I end up not liking it then I'll cover it with wool like Baggare did his 170.
I ended up getting a new rear carry through built. By the time we dress the exfoliation out it was very thin.
I got the RH panel mostly done today, but I'll cut the hole for the engine monitor once I decide which I'm getting. Started on the pilot side later in the day. Probably get it mostly done tomorrow.

Re: P206A mummy restoration

Hey that Selkirk foam is looking really good. My plastics are all broken and brittle and I'm about to update the interior soon so your experience is very valuable. I was talking with the local interior/upholstery specialist about weight reduction and he agrees those plastics are quite heavy, though he usually just covers them with leather as most clients don't care about weight on their normal Cessnas and Bonanzas, but for my floatplane every pound matters. He says he could take out the plastics and make some simple interior from lightweight fiberglass sheets or similar, selkirking like you did then might work on my plane.
Will stay tuned.
Which engine monitor are you thinking of? I just bought the edm830 as I don't need a big panel makeup.

Well I'm hoping for a MVP-50P, but may go with a JPI 900. Whichever the wife let's me buy, but I'm leaning towards the EI as I like their fuel guages and the fact that you dont need to send the monitor back to them if I upgrade my guages at a layer date. The 830s are nice, but it sure is nice to remove all the old guages.
