Rant Re: Flying Video Critique

I'm not pointing fingers at anyone in particular, and I should probably just keep my mouth shut, but here goes:

I'm amazed at the critiques people post about flying videos put together by fellow pilots on this board.

I don't like the music you used.
I don't like any music with my flying videos.
Where's the music.
Too fast.
Too slow.
Not enough of this.
Too much of that.

Anybody who has had their sensibilities offended in such a manner, or any other manner, should definitely ask for a refund of the high price of admission they paid to watch the video in the first place.

As someone who fumbles around and posts the occasional video (many of which I don't even like very well myself, after I go back and watch them again), I can tell you what a labor of love it is to do a video. They're a lot of damn work to put together (if you are as inept as me, at least), and some of us are reluctant to even post them in the first place (my computer is littered with videos I didn't think were worth sharing).

If you don't like something about a video, or you don't like the video entirely, then don't watch it. Better yet, go make your own video to show all of us pikers what a masterpiece really looks like. But posting negative comments about a video only has the effect of discouraging that person, or future people, from doing more videos. I don't want to discourage people from doing flying videos, I want to see them all--good, bad, and ugly.

IMHO, nitpicking someone's video is like telling them their kid (or at least their dog) is ugly. Just because it may be true doesn't mean you have to say it out loud.

Rant off. :-#

The Freedom of Speech is an incredible thing. At least we don't go off and burn down an FBO or take out some unsuspecting A&P/IA in our anger over a homemade video.

I agree with the rant, I just think it would have been more effective without the little yellow face thingies, those things really bug the shit out of me.

It's because you're accessible. You're the person who made it, you're here waiting to read the responses from those you submitted it to. This is the Internet, man. Are you expecting everyone to be polite and just give virtual high fives in thanks for giving them free entertainment and stoke? No good deed goes unpunished.

Move on. Keep posting your videos, but you have to move past what other people think of them. Everyone has a GoPro now, so the novelty has worn off. Your videos will always mean more to you than to anyone of us. We all have our own collection of boring GoPro videos.

Music is one of those things that's so subjective that you're never going to please everyone, or even half of them. We put music on our videos usually because it's a way to cover up the poor environmental audio, blown out by loud wind, but also because we're already connected to that music and it really enhances the feelings of recounting the experience. But only for you.

I've gotten tons of shit for the music I have chosen in the past too. I understood where those critics were coming from when I watched their videos and their crappy music. If you want to maximize the viewing experience for the widest range of consumers, use music that is not popular, but rather some movie score. I think you already did that on one of your vids in the past, it was great. No vocals, just music that is tailor made for enhancing the visual.

Or, you could say fuck it, and stop caring what anyone thinks. There's no shortage of opinions available on the Internet.

I don't disagree with you Zane, but my post wasn't intended to be about me or my videos. It was intended to be about the first-time video poster who may have some neat stuff to share with us, but who doesn't post it because he or she doesn't want to get slagged for it.

I like some videos, and dislike others. But I like to see them all. I realize the internet is full of opinions, and I'm all for freedom of speech, but if our negative comments discourage people from posting videos and we don't get to watch all the flying vids we might otherwise get to see, I think that's a shame. That's all I'm saying.

Yep. Good point. That goes for most stuff posted here, not just videos.

Encourage submissions with positive feedback, others will be more apt to post as well.

People post bids and wait for responses. Is this turning into eBay? Only pos feedback. Maybe I need to be elsewhere.

Re: Rant Re: Flying Video Critique

I shoot a lot of videos (skydiving) for customers. I do my best to make a efficient and pleasing product for the customer. I will have my employees edit some of the videos. They send me a copy and I proof it before it goes out. I have them make changes and that critique cant always be long and soft. I have my idea of what is a good video and others may not agree. I try and watch other vids to compare and adapt the good points to mine. If someone gives a negative critique on one of my vids I am not above getting my feelings hurt. If I get one unlike I think "who would not like that?" I posted a response to a guys start video, He kept twisting the prop control knob in over and over past the spring back, took his hand off the fuel condition knob during the start sequence. No big deal, not my airplane, but I still typed away my not so long and soft critique about how I think he should do it. Some other anonymous came on and let me know that my post came across like Im an asshole. I liked the camera angle, lighting, etc and will try and duplicated that part in the future. If I had spent the time to include that maybe I would have came across better. I did follow up with why not to keep twisting the prop control knob in. I guess my point is, Look at the critique, see if it has merit, change if you want, and disregard.
