Red Bull Air Races

I see the races are headed to Texas Motor Speedway in FTW in September. That's like 10 minutes from me. Super stoked!!!
Not quite Reno but it'll have to do. The Reno races are always right when the elk are bugling and I just can't bring myself to give up chasing the buggers.

Has anyone ever been to a Red Bull race and is anyone planning on attending?

Re: Red Bull Air Races

I was planning on attending the Ascot event in the UK, but balked when I saw airfare. $1,500 round trip...blah.

May head to Las Vegas instead.

I saw it several years ago when they were in San Francisco. It's not Reno but it's still pretty cool.

I went to the races the last time they were in San Diego. It was a slow showing because of low ceiling moving in and out throughout the day. All that to say it was cool and a must see in person at least once. Its pretty amazing what they do so low to the deck.

Re: Red Bull Air Races

I went to the one at Liberty State Park in NJ a few years ago. It was really awesome. I was lucky enough to get tickets for the whole weekend. I took my wife the first day (qualifying) and took my dad for father's day on race day. If you like planes, I think you have to love it. In between the races, they had their aerobatic helicopter, as well as a rescue demonstration by the coast guard.

On qualifying day, we got pit passes, and were able to meet all the pilots, check out the planes up close, etc. I spent a few extra minutes with MIke Goulian and his mechanic. Both incredibly nice guys. No reason they had to take the time to talk to me when they were trying to prepare for a race, but that is the type of guys they all are.

If you can swing it, I say go for it. Those are two days I will always remember.

Re: Red Bull Air Races

My wife is Hungarian and we were visiting her folks in Budapest in 2006 when the Red Bull races were raging on the Danube in front of the Hungarian Parliament building. WOW! It was even better because I wasn't expecting it. The video below was from 2008, but it really shows the course there well. I don't know what the US courses will be like, but the races will get your blood flowing. I think I'll keep my Maule away from the fight!

Peter Besenyei is quite the star in Hungary apparently!! Says in his bio that he flew under the Chain Bridge on the Danube.....upside down!!!!

SKILLS SKILLS SKILLS!!!!!!

A question for those that have been before: So the pit pass allows you access to the planes/pilots etc. Does that mean you leave the venue and travel to the airport.....? Do they have a shuttle or how does it work? Seems to me that the logistics of trying to get to the airport and then back to the stadium would be a major hassle but if that's what has to be done.......

Re: Red Bull Air Races

Funny, I was just pricing tickets for the Red Bull races in Vegas yesterday. I think I'm going to take the plunge. We may need to have a BCP meet-up, no?

Here is Besenyei under the Chain Bridge.

And here's a video:

Re: Red Bull Air Races

I went to the races in Monument Valley in 2007 and they were awesome! From what I understand the pilots didn't like them as well because unlike over water, the pylons were set at varying elevations. Steve Jones missed the ground by a couple feet, hit the pylon and pulled out right over the crowd. It was a stunning backdrop but I highly doubt they will ever do it there again. Here's the video:

Re: Red Bull Air Races

Yeah, I've always seen the races conducted over open water. Wonder how they plan to set them up in a stadium such as Texas Motor Speedway? The potential for a serious mishap seems high.

Re: Red Bull Air Races

I have already purchased tickets for the race in Vegas. My wife and I have been fans since its inception and we are finally going to able to attend. We are planning to stay the week after and attending the Monster Energy Cup Supercross (motorcycle) race the next weekend. Can’t wait!
