Relocating to Seattle

At the end of March I will fly my 182 to Seattle to relocate there.
Good bye jungle :(

Already met some BCP members there , Spam can, TomD , and Jughead, all very nice guys, hope to meet more members in the future, I will be flying as much as I can ,as long as weather allows it.

I like the flying there so far, it is real pretty, need to learn to use carb heat and keep out of the ice.
Any tips or advice is welcomed.
Cant wait to go to Idaho next summer. :D

I would like to meet more BCP members along the way, most likely will fly along the coast of California and then Oregon.
Any members from Mexico?
Should be a fun trip going up there.

Re: Relocating to Seattle

You know that is kind of becoming a problem, all my aviation friends are asking to come do the flight with me ,and I tell them I rather have someone who is used to fly in the USA, I already have a copilot, he is a friend who flies all around the USA all the time, if he bails I let you know, thanks for the offer.

Re: Relocating to Seattle

Don't fly single engine IFR over the Cascade Mt range, engine failure will probably more than likely be fatal. Also, there is ice and other such threats lurking. Fly smart and don't push the wx. That is my 2 cents worth....

Re: Relocating to Seattle

Thanks G44.
In Costa Rica we do not have any weather data, just the 1 hr sattelite photo.
It is very predictable though.
Be back by 11 AM at the hangar and you avoid the afternoon thunderstorms.

Now in the USA does the weather that shows in the screen in the plane like XM weather can shows just clouds, and not only convective systems?
Does it show icing?

Relocating to Seattle

Welcome to the NW motoadve. I have a place on the north Oregon coast. I'm a 2 minute walk from the airport. I hope you come visit some time.

Re: Relocating to Seattle

Oregonmaule yes most likely I visit on my way up, will keep you posted when the dates are closer.

Rezrider you still have time to come visit this winter, I leave at the endo of March.

Halestorm please tell me this is a sandbar in the PNW area, want to fly there!
Im trying to get a hangar at Fall city ideally since we plan to live in Sammamish.
second and third options are Crest and Aurburn.
Im open to advice/suggestions.

I see you have the Sportsman and MT prop, you have bigger tires than I do.
I have 6x6.00 in the nose and 8x6.00 in the mains.
What tires do you have?

I fly safely single engine over the cascades all the time. It's not deadly. You just need to plan your route and really evaluate the weather reports for possible icing. And have a way out. I fly over them less often in the winter, unless it's a beautiful day. But the statement "Don't fly Single engine IFR over the cascade mt range," is not even necessary. [-X

MotoDave:
We have forecasts for just about everything you would need to know about and then some. For icing reports we have AIRMET's and we also have several weather charts that predict ice at different levels. We also have a flight path tool that will allow you to put your route in and predict your icing chances (0-100%). It's far more accurate than the massive AIRMETs that they issue. I've flown around here in cases that they predicted ice and there was absolutely none, but before I launched I would look for PIREPs and sometimes call Seattle Approach and ask for tops/ice reports. That's if you fly IFR! If you don't, then this is not even a factor!

Re: Relocating to Seattle

I'm based in Auburn. They have some "open hangars" open as far as I know. I pay $411 for an enclosed hangar.....sucks but it sure is nice to know it's safe inside and I can leave my supplies/tools there. RNT is going to be more expensive period. I have a friend that lives in Bellevue but he keeps his airplane @ S50 (Auburn) cause it's less expensive and it's covered. If you have questions email me.... [email protected]

You're welcome to stay with us on your way up through Oregon if it fits your plans. I'm based at S03, Ashland, Oregon.

Sounds like an epic trip!

I'm not familiar with the traffic patterns on the roads around there (east of Seattle area), but looks to me that either Firstair Field (Monroe) or Harvey Field (Snohomish) might be an easier commute if it doesn't work out for you at Fall City. Might also be cheaper.

I'm also curious as to that gravel bar location.

Running a 8:00x6 on the nose and 8:50x6 on the mains, pretty sweet setup.

Gravel bar is a secret location south of Portland and north of Eugene, Zane made me fly there blindfolded.

Re: Relocating to Seattle

Thanks for the info everyone.

Now the tricky part is the arrival into Seattle area in early April, seems to be the weather is pretty bad then?
IFR most likely will have ice, so what other options do you guys recommend?
My route is going to be along the California coast, then to Eugene OR, from there seems to be is where the weather gets more complicated, correct?

Open to suggestions.

Re: Relocating to Seattle

FWIW I was at Harvey Field yesterday, there is probably a waiting list to get into an enclosed hangar but there appears to be lots of open hangars available. They're apparently running short of airplane customers so a lot of them have motorhomes & boats in them. Surprisingly there are still 4 or 5 airplanes tied down outside- don't know the cost difference between a tie-down and an open hangar, but I'd sure much rather have my airplane under cover. Probably a waiting list at Monroe also as I recall several airplanes are kept outside there also.

While I was in the area I flew down the valley & spotted the strip near Duvall that you flew into with Jon a while back. Timed it and it appeared to be about 2000' long. Nice! Had a couple airplanes parked on it near the north end, one of them was a twin. Maybe you should talk to the owner & see if you can keep your 182 there.

Re: Relocating to Seattle

Hotrod 180 that is a great option, Duvall is a lot closer to Sammamish.

Yes that is the strip, one airplane is a 310 and the other plane a single engine one at the north end of the strip.
Wont hurt to talk to the owner.
