removing cessna hatshelf?
Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

On my 170b I am putting a new headliner in, I have the extended baggage and this piece of trim is really annoying and gets in the way of bulkier items. Can it be removed, or some tinnermans sub'd for the rivets? Baggage shelf I believe p/n 0512148

I had the same question when I installed my extended baggage. What’s the basis of eligibility for its removal? I don’t remember specifically, but I think that it is not illustrated in any of the Selkirk instructions, so I deduced that it’s removal was part of the install instruction for the STC. They really are not perfectly detailed so you have to fill in the gaps in the steps that are described. Removal of that piece is one of those gaps. Not as definitive as you’d like, but the best that can be done.

Airglas extended baggage has no basis for removal.
Minor thing to remove IMO.

I agree with Aryana’s approach as an alternative. It is really only an upholstery attachment clip. I just didn’t mention the removal in my log entry based on the assertion that it’s removal was implied in the Selkirk instructions.

Love it "removal implied"
Goes with my favourite "as found on aircraft".

I would sincerely hope that your mechanic would happily make a log entry that this non structural piece was removed during installation of the extended baggage.
The baggage has to be signed off. Surely removal of that "Hat shelf" (and yes, that's what it was) is a "minor alteration" at worst.....

I didn't remove my hat shelf due to the rear seat back attachment. What are you guys doing if you want to still use the bench seat?

MTV, the way it goes with my Aircraft Maintenance Engineer is that I typically write the log entry after he coaches me. Then he reviews, edits, and coaches me some more. No wool is ever pulled over his eyes. I’ve worked too long and hard to earn his trust. The definition of minor vs. Major mod is a bit tighter here than under FAA rules. Some FAA approved STCs, particularly the older ones, would not pass current criteria with their documentation. We deal with it the best we can. Not looking to taunt Transport Canada into a debate. We try to make it easy on ourselves and on any official who may have to audit us.

They are riveted to the bottom of the shelf on my 59 182B

That would make the shelf a major airframe member as "load bearing" structure so no longer a minor modification.

I agree. Would have to install atlee dodge or lakevue seats to get rid of it.

Not sure where the back seat bolts on, I have folding jump seats installed. Might’ve thrown old back seat away, can’t find it.

For OP, this doesn't apply to his 170B hat shelf.
