Its a 4360 I believe??? I think that most of the race Sea Furys, Super Corsairs have them in.

Re: Reno Air Races 2013 - PHOTOS

This answered my next question,

Furias is not an airplane that is easy on the gas credit card, either. If race gas costs $10 per gallon, and she burns 400 gallons per hour, well... You do the math. "It needs to be on the ground within ten minutes from the end of the race," Vance says.

Furias' main tank, located between the cockpit and the engine, holds only 200 gallons of fuel. Another 33 gallons are carried in the right wing. Spraybar water is carried in the 33 gallon tank in the left wing, while ADI and oil cooler water is carried in the wing's wetted area outside of the 33 gal. tanks. All fluids are carried inboard of the wing fold.

Vance uses 30" and 2,000 rpm for cruise, which gives about 130 gph. Internally, Furias carries a 36 gallon oil tank in the fuselage behind the cockpit, and the systems have been modified to accommodate the 4360.

That's not a "real" R-4360. it's a mockup with an extra row of cylinders.

Re: Reno Air Races 2013 - PHOTOS

that is NOT a 4360.

That beast has 56 cylinders, not a measly 28 like a 4360.

I didnt see the displacement anywhere on the display but thought it was a double 4360.
(8720)

To clear things up on who runs what

Dreadnaught and Furias are Sea Furys refitted with P&W 4360s. There have been a couple Super Corsairs at Reno that were originally equipped with the 4360 as Super Corsairs, and a Chino built bastard clipped wing corsair/4360 that caught fire in a race in Phoenix. (dramatic bailout video and detailed account by the pilot are on the web somewhere)

Most of the other Furys including 232, Sawbones, Spirit of Texas, Critical Mass, September Pops, Miss Merced, etc. run the slightly more petite Wright 3350s with ONLY 18 cyls. (Rare Bear also has a 3350)
Argonaut has a P&W 2800 - same as a stock Corsair, bearcat, tigercat (x2),
There was another Fury at reno this year with a stock Bristol Centaurus engine.

The Hughes Hercules H4 and the Convair B36 both used the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Majors (4 rows of 7 cylinders)...

Somebody has too much time on their hands. This is obviously 2 different 4360 bolted together in the name of a little fun. Just leave the nose case off one and the accessory on the other and voila!

Can you imagine the crankshaft you'd need to run this thing? Not to mention the strain on all those intake pipes.

According to the Internet the largest recip aircraft engine to actually run was a Lycoming.

Rare Bear's new paint job is... ugh. I liked the old white/bronze stripe. Either way, these are all badass.

Silly question: someone mentioned a bailout. Do the air racers have an assisted bailout/integrated seat chute? Or is it a pop the canopy and undo your harness and jump like you're trying to dunk a basketball kind of maneuver?

It's the rule of three asses for bailing out. Plexiglass. Harness. Your ass.

there's a video on youtube of Kevin Eldrige bailing out of a burning super corsair in a race in Phoenix in the early 90s.

check it out.

here's another way too exciting low altitude bailout

Skyraider landed fine missing the outer wing panel. Mustang pilot reported no elevator control after the collision.
