Rotator Cuff surgery: grounded 8-10 weeks

The MRI confirmed what I knew. I need some screws, duct tape and super glue to fix the rotator cuff. Go in next Tuesday. No PIC flying for me 8-10 weeks.

Should be good to go by October and the AOPA convention in Palm Springs. Also John Bacon is doing a flyin at the Bacon strip the same weekend.

This getting old isn't for wussies.

Re: Rotator Cuff surgery: grounded 8-10 weeks

I wish you a speedy recovery and to get it off to a good start make sure the surgeon understands that the shoulder he is working on is the one you use to reach back to your billfold. He will do a good job.

Lynn Sanderson (Dirtstrip) passed away from natural causes in May 2013. He was a great contributor and will be missed dearly.

I'm sorry to hear that Rob. I hope that recovery is swift and painless.

Re: Rotator Cuff surgery: grounded 8-10 weeks

That is a bitch of a surgery...had it years ago. I hope the improvements and orthoscopic techniques they have developed make yours a less painful and quicker recovery. My advice is don't skimp on rehab. If I had done more, my range of motion would be better. Strength and stability has come back 100%.

good luck

Re: Rotator Cuff surgery: grounded 8-10 weeks

Sorry, Rob, late summer, early fall is coming-that is the best flying time of year. What a bummer! #-o :(
Sorry about that. Putting it of till Feb does sound like a good Idea if your shoulder would tolerate it....

lc

By the way, I saw a young gal (late teens, maybe) with NO arms (not even stubs) in a restaurant eating with her feet on the table this weekend in San Diego. She wasn't holding her fork like most etiquette books would recommend.....
But she was getting it done!
Maybe with some dual.......

Re: Rotator Cuff surgery: grounded 8-10 weeks

Thanks for the good luck wishes and offers for all kinds of help. I may take y'all up on some of it. I would wait but it has been 2 and a half months since I hurt it.

This daily pain and lack of sleep is getting old too.

The doc says better not to wait to long for healing reasons. I got the best part of spring and early summer. And Johnson Creek. Now it gets hot, fires and hazy, not my favorite.

I might be PIC by September 17, fingers crossed.

Cheers...Rob

Sorry to hear about the shoulder, I did a number on mine about two years ago, I was also about two to three months out, had a date with the surgeon, then my right knee had a piece of cartridge come loose, had to have the knee done first, the shoulder seemed to heal on its own, I think I have about 90-95% back and very little pain and still getting stronger. Good luck! Joe

Re: Rotator Cuff surgery: grounded 8-10 weeks

Robb,

Good Luck with that, had mine done January 2010. As earlier advised, don't skip on the rehab. You are right about not flying for about 8 weeks, mine was the right shoulder and no way could I have pulled the flap handle on the C180 or the C175. See you in Palm Springs in October.

Excellent advice. Shoulder survey is one of the hardest rehabs. Follow the regime that your P.T. puts you on. It will suck for quite a while but it will pay off in the long run.
Best of luck.

Try...

...demonstrated ability. Fly from the other seat if that helps. Have a friend with one arm who flies his C-172 just fine. Demonstated to the FAA his ability.

Of course it is not a Maule and all us Maule pilots know that it takes exceptional skill to master that beast. :D

For sure Pat, more of that warm fall flying. Hope you have your plane this year.

What ever you do, don't skimp on the physical theory after. I had my left shoulder operated on. And going from working 3 jobs to sitting around was very hard for me. You will be surprised at what you can do with one arm. Just to keep from going crazy.
