One of them vicodin thingys and half a glass of scotch. JUST kidding! Worked for me when I was young and stupid with wisdom teeth out. Not smart though....I'll bet S-12flyer would not approve.

You are correct sir. [-X :D Alcohol and pain meds have killed a LOT of people. Fall asleep and stop breathing...end of story.
It WILL get better. But shoulders are by far the most painful rehabs. Remember, your oral pain meds take 20 to 30 minutes to take effect. If you wait to take them until after you feel pain, it is too late. Better to just take them on a schedule for the first few days.
Don't push it!!! You can do the most damage on the first couple of weeks before the tissues starts to heal. Your doc and therapist have been through this many times. (I assume) Follow their instructions. And remember, free internet advice ( like mine) is worth every penny.

s12 you are 100% on. I got the pain to a level i can live with, then fall asleep. got the chair ice water circulatory and pills. all 4 now

I wonder. S12 sir, how does foot surgery compare with shoulder surgery in the pain department?

That would depend on the type of foot surgery. There is a much broader spectrum of possible surgeries on a foot/ankle. Simple to very complex. After some, you can walk with a walking boot a day or two later. Other require non-weight bearing for months. But as a general rule they tend to be better tolerated than most shoulder surgeries. One big issue with shoulders is that much of the damage is done to soft tissues. Very difficult to immobilize soft tissue. Therefore it moves during healing and causes pain. They generally have more swelling as well and that can cause pain too. Bone on the other hand, (or foot) can be pinned or screwed into position and held in place. Less movement usually means less pain. Even soft tissue repairs to the foot can be casted or splinted and held somewhat stable. Don't see too many shoulder casts anymore. Even with total shoulder replacements.
If I was forced to choose, I would take the foot. Hands down.

Well my heart goes out to our patient then. I've nursed my wife through about three (IIRC) foot bone rebuilds and she was near about impossible with it. As pain goes though I had a herniated disk at lower left lumbar 4/5. That was my worst ever. By far. I didn't sleep from Sunday (golf course twist injury) until I went under the knife Friday afternoon at about 4PM. And that was with a steady regimen of vicodin from Monday morning through surgery. It's been fine ever since.

Anyway, Hey OM, is the airplane at Madras or at Troutdale International?

We'll see how you're feeling when I get up there to claim my airplane. I'll be quartered in Scappoose but could probably operate a burger flipper on the Traeger. Nice socks dude.

No prune juice! Eat oranges and drink apple juice. I speak from experience.

The two fruits I mentioned maintain the correct balance to keep you regular. Pain meds/narcotics slow movements in your intestines to a crawl. Prune juice may solve one problem and create another.

Three capsules of fiber twice a day is good maintenance as well.

I am just coming off pain meds and have learned a lot. I do speak from experience.

Prune juice is good. Hot in a cup like coffee. My grandpa used to put a shot of Old Crow in there too. Once in the morning does it. Not kidding. He lived to be 98 and then died suddenly of unknown causes. Just goes to show you that if you drink in the morning long enough it will kill you.

Re: Rotator Cuff surgery: grounded 8-10 weeks

I guess they haven't come that far since I did it in 1989 after an injury firefighting...it was one of the most physically uncomfortable nights I have spent. The pain would get bad, the nurse would give me morphine, I would get sick and vomit from the meds and the cycle would start over. Remember, they basically hacked your arm off and then rebuilt it.

As I said before, though the rehab is painful, I wish I had done more. The upside is your arm will be useful again.

X2 on mixing alcohol and meds...no no.

Speedy recovery.

Re: Rotator Cuff surgery: grounded 8-10 weeks

Man, that brings back memories...some good, some bad. As this was pre-BCP days, I spent most of my time in front of the big screen with a Palystation controller (as soon as I could manipulate one) playing this cool fighter jet game flying all sorts of planes. That was one of the good memories.

Hang in there buddy!

hey lc and all my bcp bro's. major pain gone. been off the Oxycontin for 4 days. been taking less and less oxycodone , mainly at night to sleep, crazy dreams. i made it till 5pm today no meds but the pulsating, throbbing pain finally won.

going flying tomorrow, i got a friend to be pic so i'm legal. got to fly right seat since the left arm is the good one.

spent 3hours at the hangar today wiping dead bugs off the maule.

never had an injury like this where the doc has to make you hurt a lot more so you can get better. this to shall pass.

thanks for asking.

cheers...rob
