Hello fellow desert flyers,
As most of you know, the shade structure (known as “The Bar”) at the Bacon Strip Ranch blew down last summer and was unsalvageable. This was a sad day indeed as the Bar was the gem of the Ranch and where everyone would hang out. (For before and after photos, check out the Bacon Strip Ranch facebook page). The owner, John Bacon, plans to rebuild, but the damage was a major setback as he had spent well over $3K (and lots of labor) on the old shade structure. John’s current Ranch project is a perimeter fence around the camping area. It’s about half done now and it too represents a significant amount of time and money.
I really like the BSR and really miss the shade structure. Everything else is still in place – the old wood floor, tables, chairs, benches, fire rings, aircraft tie downs, shooting range, outhouse, ATV rental, etc. So… I decided a “Save the Bacon Strip” campaign was needed to help this great little fly-in camp get back on the chart! I approached John Bacon with an idea to rebuild the Bar, and he was all for it, yet a bit overwhelmed by the offer. You see, John is not one to ask for help or take a handout, and he wants to return the favor to anyone who contributes to the cause. He also insisted a granite plaque would be placed to list the names of those who contributed.
Here is what we came up with:
$50.00 donation. Allows one night free camping (normally $30.00 and includes firewood) and your name on the plaque.
$100.00 donation. Allows three nights camping and your name on the plaque.
$250.00 or more donation. Allows you the “Keys to the Ranch” for unlimited free camping forever and your name on the plaque.
(As you can see, you’re really just paying for camping in advance).
The goal is to have the new roof in place well before the October Fly-In, which by the way will be a lot of fun and will include the official “Christening of the Bar” event as well as a few other activities.
The proposed new roof design is not yet finalized, but the current plan is to go with an all steel, commercial carport style structure with a wind rating of 100 MPH. The delivery and erection is done on site by the manufacturer (in one day) and is included in the purchase price. The size will largely depend on how much money is raised. In regards to shade in the desert, bigger is always better! The existing wood floor is about 18 x 25 feet so that is the minimum, but definitely bigger would be better. Cost is expected to be in the $3K - $4.5K range.
So far the Bar (shade roof) fund is at $2200.00. John Bacon is the biggest contributor, and yours truly is in for $300.00, including a commitment to be at the site during the weekend of construction. I’m in charge of the campaign and also been given the prestigious title of “Chief Bacon Strip Events coordinator” (CBSEC). You may donate by sending money direct to me via my Paypal account at [email protected] or send me a check. (Yeah, that may sound a bit fishy but my credentials check out – really!) Every cent collected will be used for the roof fund, and I am absolutely committed to making this happen.
We need MORE dirt strip fly-in camps, not less, and we need to keep the ones we have open.
Any questions, please call me or John Bacon. Thanks for reading this long post (which by the way, was my first on the BCP forum).
Sincerely,
Charlie Rowlett
