Seaplane Water Loop? Oh, I meant to do that....

Looks like these boys got lucky. I bet the seat cushions were surgically removed.

I just noticed that the rudder was deflecting to the left throughout the entire ground loop. Wonder if something broke?

Not enough of a nose high attitude?

Reminds me a little of this one, which I've heard was caused by not enough nose-high. (I aren't no float pilot, so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong).

That's the most cinematic floatplane crash of all time, from the movie Mother Lode. I remember watching that as a kid and thinking "holy shit!"

But your assessment seems correct, he was pitched down and fast when the float touched. Still have to flare!

Re: Seaplane Water Loop? Oh, I meant to do that....

From what I have heard the Mother Lode incident was with Bob Hoover at the wheel. The needed a pilot so Bob "being the best" was drafted even though he had little if no time in a Beaver on floats. Since it was a movie he had to "hit his mark" and looks as if he forced it.

Turns out they re-wrote the script to accommodate the amazing footage they had captured.

Could be all wet (pun intended) on this one, happy to be corrected.

It was NOT Bob Hoover. We got an entire thread on here about that crash, lemme see if I can find it.

Gump is right.

Lesson to me to research before I post.

Evidently was Hollywood stunt pilot w/ little or no float plane time.

Have not been able to dig up name of pilot.

Location: Lake Wolfgangsee - Austria

Departure airport: Lake Wolfgangsee
Destination airport: Lake Wolfgangsee
Narrative:
During the airshow "Air Challenge 2015" the Do 24 ATT was going to perform a "touch and go" display on the lake.

The plane slighly rolled to the left, then made a quick 270 degree turn leftwise ("Ringelpietz") and came to a sudden stop within apx two lenghts of the planes lenghts.

The crew stated they hit a floatsome and pictures show a hole in the fuselage.

The Amphibian plane was towed by boats to a nearby slip and is now on land for further repair and inspection.

Seems they hit something in the water. Joy riding and not surveying the touchdown area. [-X

Re: Seaplane Water Loop? Oh, I meant to do that....

Huh, sure looks more like a nose low touchdown with too much speed to me, just like the "Mother Lode" accident.

Water loops are fully capable of ripping a hole in floats.

Could be something in the water like they said I guess, ripping a big hole, but the hole in the picture looks like it was torn aft-to-fore? Is that the step vent to the right in the photo?

Re: Seaplane Water Loop? Oh, I meant to do that....

I agree with Halestorm, having hit the odd piece of wood in my day. Doesn't cause the loop, wrong attitude and speed does. Strange the crew would propose (or not refute) an excuse that only illustrates their ignorance of seaplane flying.

Re: Seaplane Water Loop? Oh, I meant to do that....

Huh. Attitude was so flat that I actually thought they were just intending to fly low without touching. There was no indication they were intending to be in a position to safely make contact with the water.

Re: Seaplane Water Loop? Oh, I meant to do that....

I agree, pilot could not decelerate the aircraft straight due to a (an overly) flat attitude. Center of resistance was too far forward and created extreme yaw instability.

Survey says...

Bad design and flying. Contrary to the report of floatsam being a factor in losing control.

Re: Seaplane Water Loop? Oh, I meant to do that....

Anyone of you guys ever driven one of those big flying boats ? Just curious how you all might know it was too flat of an attitude . Awhile back someone posted a video that Red Bull put out that had some cockpit footage of (not sure if it was same plane)of these guys spinning around on purpose . Wondering if it was the same incident .

Haven't flown flying boats at all, I could be totally full of it.

From years of float flying tho I do know how it feels when you're too far forward on the step, that's how water loops happen.
