Seattle to Oshkosh 2022

Finally able to do the OSH fly-in trip. A friend and I will be flying a 182P KPAE to KOSH on Wed July 27-28.

First stop will be the Lewistown MT area. My brother lives there so an obvious stop. I am looking for recommendations for our second stop, somewhere near the ND-SD-MN border?

We will be returning on Sun and hopefully get to explore some of the Missouri breaks strips, sadly without big tires.

Re: Seattle to Oshkosh 2022

Lewistown (LWT) MT, Edgely, ND and Wautoma, WI on the way there. Decided to stop in Wautoma thinking it would be easier to get fueled up and take a break before the big jump into OSH.

Sauk Center, MN, Glendive, MT, LWT, Lincoln, MT, and Kellogg, ID on the way back.

ND had the cheapest gas, $4.85 / gal, by far but we didn’t have exact fuel burn numbers and didn’t want to push the first leg that far back across MN, plus my passenger needed batteries.
Lincoln, MT is nice but doesn’t have gas. I was getting a lot of carb ice so didn’t go direct over the Bob Marshall.

Interesting ending, on the way back into KPAE, I picked up ATIS and called tower. My transmission was very garbled on the 430W so I switched to the KX155a. Still garbled. Tower transmits “ whoever is transmitting is very garbled, if you can hear me, ident” A few seconds later, says “58628 turn 30 left and ident”, so we did. Then he clears me to land with instruction to ident to acknowledge each instruction. Immediately after pulling off the runway, all radios were clear. Must have been static. Justifies getting my static wicks fixed.

I made a similar trip starting from Port Townsend. My stops were Ryan Field (2MT1), and Chamberlain, South Dakota (9V9). I made it to KOSH on Friday, 7/22. Here I am in row 521 in the North 40:

I had hoped to have the big tires on and stop in Winifred MT. The tires are now re-planned for this coming Friday and I never reached Ralph Rogers. My brother lives in LWT so we played it safe and stayed with him overnight both ways.
I was in Row 524 in the North 40.

The runway at Winifred is good grass, and uphill to the west. Lots of folks land there with small tires. Great airstrip, and a fun town. They usually have gas there as well.
