Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

Hey guys,

I have an extended baggage kit and glare shield ready to go on as soon as my 182 gets back from annual next week. I read through some discussions, and besides patience and a good set of trimming tools, do you guys have any pointers or nuggets you wish you'd have known before you tackled the job?

Thanks

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

I put in the extended baggage kit....great addition...one thing I failed to se was antenna mounts and static ports located in the top and sides of the baggage area aft of the original...they got in the way of installing the side panels...solution was found at Oshkosh...preformed Fiberglas cowling dimples...we cut the side panels and installed those to protect the lines...painted to match.

Lest us know how the glare shield installs...that’s my next upgrade

Good luck...Dpasahow

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

There is a lot of trim, fit, trim, fit in these projects.

A pneumatic belt sander will save trips back to the bench:

(I have one works great)

A small bench sander is useful for these tasks, and many others. I have a Dremel 1731, which apparently is no longer made. This is similar:

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

Installed both in a 170. Baggage took quite a bit of trim work. On the glareshield, I used poster board to make a template that fit, then cut the glareshield once. Worked great, and a nice product. Be sure to carefully consider how much overhang you want over the panel face. Too much can interfere with viewing instruments, too little fails to shade the panel.

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

I just finished installing the Selkirk EB kit in my ‘56 C180. A few minor tweaks here and there, but pretty much a drop-in product.

Be aware the metal kit involves riveting the side support rails through the fuselage (which I actually like), but that only added about 1.5 hours or so to the install.

There was a fair amount of trimming on the fiberglas bulkhead cover.

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

I did the airglas extended baggage in my 170B. Dropped in without any trimming.

(I had to move the ELT, the strobe power supply and the battery, but I didnt have to trim the extended baggage kit.)

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

The kit for my 182F doesn't have the side covers, just the floor, battery cover, and bulkhead, with the rubber insulation for the sides. I'm hoping it goes smoothly!

I have a Dremel and shears, I ordered a belt sander too. Looks like I should be set, thanks!

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

Started the install last night, so far so good. Found a mess of cables in the belly that could go away, and rerouted the remaining few wires to below the level of the baggage floor. Installing the floor in my plane only requires trimming around one main rib and a couple of little notches on the back edge. All the Selkirk pieces are of excellent quality and the thickness is a great compromise between weight and sturdiness.

Tonight I'm going to have to figure out what to do with the ELT, I have some ideas, currently weighing whether I should mount it to the top or cut an access pannel into the baggage floor and leave it below. I feel like the ELT is something that needs to be readily accessible, even more so than it was before when there was a bulkhead panel info front of it.

Because the kit for my plane does not include side panels, and they are not available, I'm considering using contact adhesive to lay vinyl down on the rubber to match the rest of the interior. I understand I will need to send it off for a burn test.

Are there any legal considerations with installing some netting attachment points to the extended baggage? The rear bulkhead cover was secured with four eye bolts, and there are a pair on the floor right behind the rear seat, it would be nice to have a couple pairs in the extended baggage area.

As a fellow “f” owner currently in the same reso-mod phase of ownership, I would appreciate seeing some pictures of the final product for the glare shield especially but would appreciate seeing the extended baggage as well.

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

Selkirk stuff is all good quality material. It’s mostly fiberglass, so not as light as carbon fiber.

Some of their stuff, like glareshields, is kind of generic, in the sense that they make them with plenty of excess, so the installer can decide how much overhang there is. So some trimming and fitting is required for some parts.

As I noted earlier, you need to decide how much overhang you want on your glareshield. Too much, and you may not be able to see things at the top of the panel. Too little and there may not be adequate shading of the panel.

I’ve had their glareshields and extended baggage in two airplanes, and I’d do it again.

If the carbon fiber extended baggage kit were approved in my current plane, I’d have probably done that instead.

I’ve helped install a complete interior kit on a friends plane. There was a fair bit of trimming required, but not bad. And, it’s just Fiberglass so easy to trim.

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

Thx for the Info. MTV.

Wonder how Selkirk quality compares to AVION and Ashby these days. The few comments I found for Ashby are not that good.

Pictures at Selkirk could be a lot better in order to see more details.
https://selkirk-aviation.com/wp-content ... iation.pdf

How does the underside look at the say 3" protruding to provide glareshield to the instruments?
Does one fill that underside cavity with something? I see AVION puts the lights there and makes it look filled to the same edge thickness.

I don't have a glareshield at all in my C180,
and the lack of "shade" for the panel has never bothered me.
Is that really an issue for people?

It can be depending on lighting conditions, and types of instrumentation. To me not a big deal, but the overhang is a nice location for instrument panel lighting….

Point is, if you’re tall and overhang is too much…..

Re: Selkirk EB and Glare Shield Install

Shading for my instruments on the 180 has never been an issue.
Less so since I put a shade film on the upper part of the windshield.
Commanders came from the factory with an added tinted plastic portion there and I truly appreciated it.

This all now is just a make it nicer thing. The option to have the lights incorporated to the glare shield could be an operational improvement.

Anyone make a good professional OEM looking under lip light strip for the glare shield?

Found this pic on another site. Already asked there for the manufacturer...
Anyone here who can provide a vector?
