I fixed your image for you. You must visit the image in your gallery, click the Image URL link on the toolbar above, and use that URL (web address) between [img] tags.

As to your question, good luck. Too many tall trees and steep downslope from the open end. Looks like a challenge requiring good insurance 8)

Q: How to use this short strip?
A: Carefully?

Nice looking place. Reminds me of Findus and Pettson books.

What EZ said. Or fill in the lake a bit and extend the runway!

Looks like a pond on the downhill end of runway. Hard to tell if one could jog in and around those trees. Better if the tall ones on the downhill slope were taken out.

Definitely looks like a challenge. Is that your strip or one you found?

The downhill end is at the bottom of the picture. The lake "below" the picture is about 1000 feet wide.

Read up on the "how do I waterski" thread, then get really good at it.

Re: Short strip / STOL Airplane

It's a one way but doesn't look that difficult. Looks to be plenty wide, judging by close by objects Too many weeds for water skiing. Go mornings or evenings when winds and convection light. Have good brakes and brush up on good approach speed and glide slope control. Get it on the button and kill of as much speed as you can going up hill. Use brakes carefully going down. Watch out for road traffic. Someone is just likely to turn down that road just as your on final with no options.

I think you mean "How do I hydroplaning the wheels?" of which, oddly enough, Stinsoner is the OP! Stinsoner you have your solution!

Re: Short strip / STOL Airplane

Stinsoner,

It is definitely a one way, landing uphill toward tall trees and taking off downhill over the water. I would approach to the lake with full flaps and hover taxi up to the very beginning of the road. On takeoff, I would get into low (six inches or 15 centimeters) ground effect as soon as possible and dynamically work the stick fore/aft to stay in low ground effect until fast enough over the water to maneuver safely. Unless you have a very expensive little airplane with a big engine, you are going to need the extra kinetic energy provided by staying in low ground effect.

Email me at [email protected] and I will respond with an attachment of my e-book, "Safe Maneuvering Flight Techniques," which covers this kind of stuff.

Best Regards,

Build a dock off the end of the runway... Paint numbers on it... And then go get yourself a super cub!

Craig knows this too, get a Savannah instead of a 701, and you'll fare a little better 8)

Re: Short strip / STOL Airplane

Looks like fun to me. Waterski up and water assisted takeoff, neither if which would really be needed with 550ft usable and a 3% slope.

Re: Short strip / STOL Airplane

If you look closely at the photo, there is substantial plant growth protruding from the water. 3 foot+ high, Water skiing, or hydroplaning through that is not advisable. Unless you want to end up on your back for a really short landing.

Re: Short strip / STOL Airplane

Yes, its a one way strip at my properties backyard; landning in from the lake and stoping 550 feet upphill (3% slope) in the end of the strip besides the tall trees. When take of downhill 3% slope is the same as if the strip would be about 600 feet.

My Stinson 108-1 take of and landning at 300 feet with a pilot, full loaded with fuel.

The video below shows the Stinson loaded as above, but here even equiped with Federal 3000 hydraulic skis.

In hot air, without skies, the take off distance is 300 feet.

If you can do 300ft consistently, then why are you asking how to use a 550ft strip?
