Re: Short strip / STOL Airplane

In fifty years and seventeen thousand low hours, I always lefted the lefted part. I didn't always need to get off as quick as possible nor to get in as short as possible w/o brakes, but I always considered it good practice for the real thing. On numerous real things, including ten forced landings, I found the practice to have been worthwhile.

What is the elevation above sea level ???

Which way is the prevailing winds ????

Done right, landings and take off's will be impressive....

Done wrong and you are the lead story in the evening news.... IMHO..

Just Aircraft SuperSTOL... I've wanted to build an airplane for years, but couldn't settle on what I wanted until this plane came along!

Some landings:

Re: Short strip / STOL Airplane

What happens when your landing with a 20mph tailwind? Calm is all fine for these numbers, but we are in the real world. Or if you haven't flown in a few months.

Re: Short strip / STOL Airplane

I'm assuming you're elevation is fairly low, < 300 meters. I had my Murphy Rebel, IO-240 (125hp) powered in Dallas this year (about 850 ft elevation) and had folks measure take off and landings, 75 ft on, 85 ft takeoff roll. That's with 2 people (200 lbs a piece) and 25 gallons on and off grass. I had a lot of runway available and could really drag in the last 100 ft at about 1 ft over the turf until my touchtown point, but the plane did it.

That landing would scare the crap of me, but I think a rebel could make it happen as well, specially with an IO-320/360.

Re: Short strip / STOL Airplane

I don't see the problem, you have parallel runways...with that Stinson...

As for me where is the closest airport? Many years of flying have taught me to ask why and do I really want to do this, personally I have pushed it beyond the limit way too often but then I was getting paid for it.

Standing by for the video...HD please...pass the popcorn.

Without seeing the rest of the lake you may need to be careful with glassy water???
Weeds in the water just could be a good thing.
A Chainsaw on the treed end could provide a way out in case you need one.

Looks like fun!!!

Actually, I think that Maule made a small handful of airplanes in the mid 1980's that would get out of this short strip in the photos. They had an Allison 250 in the nose if I recall.

It is my understanding that in order to buy one of these Maules you had to have a post office box in some place called Langley, VA, and the airplane had to be registered to three or four companies that had contracts in Central America delivering missionary supplies and medical supplies to the indigenous population, and you had to be pretty proficient in night operations.
