skywagon exhaust fairing

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

skywagon exhaust fairing

Looking for some cheap speed and it looks pretty good too. Have seaplane exhaust but is landplane.
1. Any measurable speed gain? 1kt would be worth it
2. Where's the best place to buy?
3. Any prep other than a rattlecan of matterhorn white?
4. Ease of installation?
5. Any cooling benefit?
6. Other pointers on it?

Here’s the one I know of, I don’t have any experience with it though. https://aircraftspeedmods.ca/products/e ... stc-sta-4/

Re: skywagon exhaust fairing

I'm also interested in any PIREPS - I bought this as part of my new firewall forward (pponk, seaplanes west engine mount, acorn exhaust). I bought it because:

1) I like how it looks
2) For the purported effect on reducing engine temps

Anything else is just a happy added benefit.

Re: skywagon exhaust fairing

I'm also interested, particularly if there's any difference in engine temps with one of these.

Re: skywagon exhaust fairing

My exhaust fairing easily adds 15-20 knots TAS. Right. Minimal gain I’m sure but it does look ok. Haven’t flown without so don’t know about the temps. Must be removed to get lower cowling off but nice machine screws attach it. I’ll try to find STC paper on it for more information.

Yep, Maple leaf, thanks Limerick!

Re: skywagon exhaust fairing

I installed the Maple Leaf exhaust fairing on my C180K approximately 7 years ago to reduce CHT's as I did not want to install the shark fins. SoCal and Arizona flying temps. The fairing took approximately 10-15 degrees off the CHT's. YMMV. No speed increase as far as I could tell. I slip a heavy sock on the exhaust when removing the cowl to not scratch the paint. Easy cowl removal and it was simple to install. I drilled out a few rivets (heads were in the way) to get a nice flush fit. Prior to final install, I used a small airbrush to primer and shot Vestal white JetGlo to match. Highly recommend. Looks good too!

Please note: the fairing does not need to be removed prior to the lower cowl removal. Cowl slides out easily from the exhaust pipe. Cheers!

Re: skywagon exhaust fairing

My sister-in-law has a full Maple Leaf kit on her Cardinal. We’ve been doing some things and talked to the Maple Leaf guys a few times. It appears their stuff does what they claim. Limerick’s pirep on the actual product being asked about seems to agree. Hard to go with a $300 airplane mod...

Re: skywagon exhaust fairing

I’d like this mod, but I’m adverse to plastic on my 185. :D :D

Other issue is I bet it only fits the right hand side. I’ll soon have the Leading Edge Exhaust by Powerflow, with dual exhaust and would want a fairing for each side.

I hope two exhaust openings aren’t going to cause me a cooling problem.

Re: skywagon exhaust fairing

I installed this fairing many years ago primarily to reduce stress on the muffler after I installed a slip -on exhaust pipe extension from Kenmore. The Kenmore extension eliminates most of the soot stains. The cowling is easily removed and installed with the fairing in place. I've never had a problem with high CHT so I didn't notice any change. Speed gain - I gave up that quest a long time ago - it's a Skywagon.

I like this one better than maple leaf, just from a looks perspective. It does help with CHTs a bit. I don't know of any approval to install it though.

They sold one to me about 6 years ago, STC SA10351SC, Texas Skyways Drawing TSFG-100-1.

Hard to say in my installation if it helped CHT as I replaced the engine, baffles, and baffle seals at the same time I installed the fairing. Highest CHT I've ever seen on my machine was around 390f.

Since this photo was taken I’ve switched to Acorn Welding/Seaplanes West muffler, no problem slipping cowling off with that setup.

I have the same set up. Did you install two Pinecone?
Thx

Re: skywagon exhaust fairing

I installed the maple leaf fairing on my 175, which has very high chts on one cylinder, No change I could detect. Speed? Not that I can tell.
They were quite candid with me about potential benefits....said it depends. I wouldn't do it again, certainly not just for looks.

I still have the exhaust system here in the box it arrived in. I was flying regularly until it got really cold and didn’t want to take the airplane out of service. Now it’s been cold or I’ve been busy. Hangar is not heated. I haven’t considered the fairings any further. Can you get them as a pair now?

Re: skywagon exhaust fairing

Installed the maple leaf. It looks nice. I didn’t have great winter baseline temps but before I couldn’t get away with fully closing cowl flaps now I can. So it’s a speed mod in so far as you can do that. Estimating 10 degrees on cylinder 4. Would recommend as long as it doesn’t crack up.
