Re: Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

I don't know if DBQ has any place to pitch a tent. Those are both my typical stops (decent cafes at both of them), and I usually spend a little time at DBQ, have lunch, and then head off for OSH. Per the NOTAM, you either have to get in there pretty early or wait until the airshow is over, so I try to time it so that I arrive at Fiske just as the airshow is finishing. I've had 2 years where I waited around at DBQ too long and barely made it into OSH before the airport was closed--one year I was the very last airplane in.

Flying in really isn't all that hard--the anticipation of flying in is a whole lot worse than the actual flying. If you know the NOTAM, and follow its rules, it's really pretty easy (you don't want to be reading the NOTAM for the first time just as you're coming up on Ripon  :)). Last weekend I did some spot landing practice, which is a good idea, as is knowing your power setting to maintain 90 knots airspeed from Ripon to Fiske. Make sure you can stay on altitude consistently, and keep your eyes open for other airplanes (obvious, but sometimes I haven't been sure that others are doing that!).

Mostly have fun. OSH is a blast!

I'm not sure about camping at DBQ but if you go, bring your own ropes (which you should have for OSH) because the T6 group takes all hangar space and most available tie downs. We flew thru their airspace yesterday on the way to C37 and could hear many flights of T6's arriving.

Re: Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

I just noticed that it was class delta - probably not going to try to camp under delta. ;-) I'll find something smaller - Cory gave me a couple of options.

This is going to be real exciting for me.

Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

We have arrived and set up camp at OSH now, after a fun couple days at the Pietenpol fly in at C37.

Lots of planes arriving and have already run into multiple Colorado friends in their super cubs!

I'm on site now too. My Kitfox is at the ultralight area and I'm camping across the street.

Hey WilgaBeast! I saw you leaving OSH yesterday. My daughter and I were just taxiing out when she asked about your plane, I said it's a Wilga as I thought "wonder if that's the guy on BCP?". You sure broke ground quickly! Wish I'd gotten a chance to check it out in person.

Re: Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

Cory - did I see the wilga beast flying with the Tora Tora Tora show?

Thanks for the recommendations - I stayed at Yankton on the way up and got hung up in Jackson last night. I had a blast at Oshkosh - looked for you all over - but too many people.

800,000 lb C5 versus a 650 lb Kitfox.

At 1:31 hanging on for dear life in the wake turbulance... The flag waver wanted me to turn onto the taxiway and depart before it came back for it's low pass. I declined the invitation and chose to wait for a bit.

Good call Larry! I was over taken by one a couple months ago on my way back from the lodge... that was one hell of a ride when I hit his wake! Full on stress test of the ole Avid... Check!

You did see us flying in the airshow. ;) I reluctantly said yes on Saturday after they asked me all week.

I was hiding all week in the warbird area enjoying air conditioning and watching the airshow. My 15th AirVenture, I thought I'd take it easy. ;)

It's a fun plane to fly! Although a bit too slow! I don't know how many 1200+ mile trips I have left in me!

Re: Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

I saw you taxiing out as I was breaking camp. I was in 558, at the end nearer the runway. That's one interesting looking airplane!

Funny how it's possible to spend the entire week at OSH, knowing that some friends and familiar airplanes are there, and never see them! But as always, it was a lot of fun. I need to send my tent poles in for rehabbing--they got a bit bent in the mid-week storm, but otherwise everything survived well, even my American and Colorado flags and flag pole.

I think we need BCP prop flags to help identify one another.
