Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

Anyone from the West flying anything slow to AirVenture? (I go 85kts)

I'd love to group up and fly with you!

Let me know.

I depart from Salt Lake City.

Re: Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

I'll be heading out from GXY, probably Saturday morning or Sunday morning, depending on the weather. But I have a heckuva time maintaining 85 knots! I flight plan for 115, which seems pretty slow to me. Although ostensibly it should take only 6.3, last year due to being vectored all around Robin Hood's barn, it was just short of 8.5, plus 2 ILSs that I hadn't expected. My usual route has been GXY-GRI-DBQ-OSH--good lunch stop at either GRI or DBQ, depending on the time of day.

Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

Myself and a Husky friend will probably start our adventure towards OSH the Thursday beforehand to arrive in Brodhead (C37) that evening for the weekend's Pietenpol/Hatz Flyin. Then I will be continuing on to OSH most likely for Sunday-Tuesday or so, maybe longer if my dad is up for it!

We have often use GRI and DBQ as good stops as well and have spent the night in DBQ for weather, but sometimes they lack hangar and ramp space because the T6's meet there, which is a pretty cool sight.

Re: Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

Still planning my route - expect to make the call about flying myself or flying commercial tonight or tomorrow. I have wednesday evening to sunday. If I can sucker someone into riding with me and splitting fuel - I'd rather fly.

Some where in the chaos of Camp Schoeller, last year we arrived on Friday and was able to snag a spot close to the theater in the woods because some people were leaving.

I would like to fly the Stol King over. What day will you pass though Minnesota? I am trying to get a radio fixed up. I only do 70.

Re: Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

I don't go into Minnesota at all, normally. With the new 430W, I suppose I could change my flight route, but I haven't thought it out much yet--after all, it's still a couple weeks away!

I'll fly over the southernmost part of Minnesota on Sunday evening (22nd) starting at around 5:30pm from the West.

Leaving Bouulder solo on wednesday evening. Hoping to be there Thursday morning - not sure where I'm overnighting. Camping next to the plane - can't fit under the low wing. Look for me in Diamond DA40 N480JP.

Don't know if the Wilga could hang with some in the low and slow category...
Headed out from Boise and made it as far as Caledonia, MN. Will head to Hartford on Saturday. Safe flight, all

Re: Slow and Low to AirVenture 2012

I see a couple of recommendations for GRI and DBQ as good stops along the way. I will likely need to overnight wednesday night.

Is it reasonable to camp on a field near DBQ - somewhere within 50-100nm of KOSH? I want to fly in thursday morning fresh - I don't want my first ever approach to be after 6-7 hours solo in the plane.

Recommendations?
