Re: Snowshoes Product Reviews

One obs on bindings. If they can absorb melted water or include metal fasteners they can freeze, become stiff, or difficult to install or remove quickly. Thawing may not be an option during an extended outdoor stay. Just something to consider if they're needed in a tough spot in deep cold. I've had it happen and render them useless unless they can be beaten with something to flex and make work.

Re: Snowshoes Product Reviews

So Phil, I see in the other thread that you finally have some snow. I expect a busted rib would prevent you from having any fun snowshoeing but I was wondering if you had a chance to try out any of the various shoes. Any reports? Can you float like a butterfly over a couple of feet of fresh powder?

I've been accused of a lot of things in my life but floating like a butterfly (or stinging like a bee) has never been one of them. ;-)

The 36" Louis Garneau's sink a couple of feet into the snow, and that's just my weight, so would suck trying to go anywhere. But they do work well stomping down the area in front of my hangar and fuel farm because they do sink. They spend time hanging in the garage when I'm not stomping.

The 40" Bigfoot Snowshoes are the ones I carry in the plane, they only sink a half a foot or so and for my purpose as survival snowshoes I'm good with that. Super easy to get in and out of.

Oh I should note that I've added trekking poles now as well, initially intended for sheep hunting, but now also to help keep me from falling over in snowshoes.

Re: Snowshoes Product Reviews

Has anyone looked at this new snowshoe recently released in France?

https://www.evvo-snow.com/en/evvo-snows ... -products/

Caution, it is not the MSR Evo which is similarly named. I ran across it in a positive review on a German winter sports site.

Seems like a very good design. REI is supposed to carry it soon. Watched quite a few YouTube videos and only downside is that there are not a lot of use examples in really deep snow.

What do you all think?

Best,

Tommy

I think they would be simply useless on anything but groomed trails or crust so hard that you didn't need snowshoes to begin with. There's just no flotation there.

Re: Snowshoes Product Reviews

Very minimal benefit to those over just tromping around in boots. Those seem to be a “why bother?” option to me. As noted above, they have very little additional surface area, which of course is the whole point to carrying snowshoes.

Re: Snowshoes Product Reviews

Two requirements, big footprint & light.

A big footprint to stomp out a take-off path or float your like a butterfly across the snow if that fails and light that you can outrun the four lagged furry friend who wants to give you a big hug

Shhhh. Don’t let this out but I don’t eat fish, don’t like the taste. But I do dearly love fishing for them.

Re: Snowshoes Product Reviews

worst cut I ever got from a fish was a redfish when I grabbed it by the gill plate and it shook its head. Cut right to the bone and the slime made a hell of an infection.

At the fish that night with some crayfish, best lowboil ever. Well it tasted that way as I got my revenge and it was served hot.
