Where exactly is "Caveman"? I'm flying from El Paso to Oregon Saturday, and could perhaps drop in.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

Hey everyone,

We are pretty well set and ready to head out tomorrow. My little 6 month old came down with an ear infection last night. Not sure if the whole gang will make it or if I'll be coming with my alternate campinb buddy. Either way, we'll be heading that way tomorrow morning or mid-day. Should be there by noon or mid afternoon. Went out and flew the plane today and yesterday. Everything is working great and we are really excited to head south. Weather seems to be clearing after today's showers too.

Everyone fly safe and we'll see you tomorrow!

Gary, thanks for the parking info.

It's roughly 12 miles south west of the town of moab. There are a bunch of really bright blue and greenish ponds just north of it. But if you just follow the river south west out of moab you can't miss it. The runway is 2700' of gravel right along the river.

The weather is looking really good for Friday but a little windy on saturday.

Gary or Rob,
Are you monitoring? We need to know if MountainMatt showed up, His SPOT shows a last hit just off of mex mountain yesterday. If I get no reply, I will head out in the morning to look. I will over fly caveman first ( just so you other guys know my plans).

They used to say there are no old bold pilots, hell, looka here........

Track My Spot

You all be careful out there

I heard word that a Husky had a mishap at Mineral Canyon earlier today. I'd guess that the wind played a role as it was pretty windy for much of the day in southern Utah. Current forecasts predict it will be windy during the day for much of the fly-in. Wind coming down a side canyon while you are flying down the main canyon or spilling over shear 1,000 ft cliffs onto your approach or departure path can create some scary conditions that are best avoided.

Your survival gear should not be just to help you when you are in a survival situation but also to make it easier to avoid being in a life or death situation by making good decisions. When you go flying during the day this weekend bring enough survival gear with you so that if conditions deteriorate beyond your comfort level it will be easier for you to make the decision to stay on the ground where ever you are rather than have to get back to base camp.

Good to hear. Sorry you didn't get to go either HiC. If wx is okay and the plane got a 100hr I might try to get in one LAST flight before my surgery on Tuesday.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

Good luck with the surgery Tad.
I got out to Caveman this morning and got to run around with those guys (Shortfielder, Rob Burson, Mountainmatt, Blu) for a while. We went into Mineral Bottom and Cedar Mountain. I had to get home and get some work done so I left early. 170 kt groundspeed @ 13.5k got me home quick. Had a quick text conversation with Bmurrish as he battled the same winds in the wrong direction.
The above mentioned were in for an awesome day. They were going to continue on to Mexican Mountain and Hidden Splendor. Shortfielder is an awesome tour guide!
I don't know if I will get back out there this weekend, Looks like it will be getting a little breezy.

What a trip!

Amazing place, amazing people, amazing flying.

A huge thanks to Rod, Paula, Hunter and Gary for all their hard work. This place is a true gem and it's wonderful that they opened their arms to make this happen. Impressive effort by all and nothing short of a marvelous display of hospitality and generosity.

I'll take some time over the next week to put together a full trip report, but here's a few pictures.

Great fly-in! Thanks for all the work to put this together. We could only stay for Friday night and I didn't take many pictures, but here's one of a few of the planes parked behind the lodge.

I made it back safe. Had an awesome time. Like others have said it was nice to finally put faces to screen names. Here are a couple random pics

Image
From the Caveman lookout tower.

Image
In front of the Caveman Lodge. Wow that place is nice.

Image
Crossing Hayden Pass. Had a 35kt tailwind so went high to avoid the downslope

Image
Fuzzy picture but gotta love the ground speed in the top left corner. 181kts level at 13.5 across Hayden Pass.

Re: Spring Utah Fly-in Pt 2 (New and improved dates May 7-9)

We didn't make Caveman yesterday because of bad wx so we kinda' made up for it today. Dritstrip, Ed and I flew SNY-Laramie-Steamboat Springs-Saratoga WY-SNY today to get dirtstrip up in the mountains. Glad you guys had a good time! This was our stop at Steamboat Springs for dinner today.Image
