SQ2'n in Alaska

Did you fly somewhere cool, take photos, and feel like telling the tale to make us drool from the confines of our offices? Post them up!

Between the nickel leading edge and the hub there are a couple of chips through the gel coat. The nickel is holding up well with only one tiny dent.

This was essentially a new prop when loaned to me by my mechanic/prop dealer. Not anymore. :D

So those minor chips you basically backfill with resin only? Is that right?

Then, and serious cuts into the underlying fibre can be repaired with a resin and fibre repair (if any). I've watched videos on how to do that on Youtube, it looks easy to do yourself.

Nearly all are just through the outer gel coat (or paint layer if you will). Too many and not really necessary to fill. I only have a couple that have exposed the carbon fiber and those I will fill with resin and then sand.

I've seen a few prop strike blades here recently and was told that as long as something isn't actually broken off the blades are repairable back at the factory. Whirl Wind is a foam core blade so I can't say if the same would be true with a wood core.

The reason I'm still running the loaner is my mechanic/prop dealer somehow screwed up the prop balance during the reassemble and when I tried flying it the entire plane vibrated. I had him put the loaner back on till it gets fixed properly.

Cory

Looking forward to it!

And finally after nearly two months another beautiful day. So off we headed to Prince William Sound, my first time there. This spot was a challenge to get into, super short with almost nothing flat and just wide enough to land on. And it was a one-way because Bob's plane was already down and parked. We both utilized our tailwheels digging into the loose gravel/rocks to get stopped. A great spot!

That video makes that glacier look a fair bit smoother then it was.

Yes it does!

Videos always make things look easier and smoother then they really are. Of course that can be of value when one bounces a landing, doesn't look anywhere near as bad as it felt....at least that's what I've been told. :^o

Re: SQ2'n in Alaska

Yea finally the loaner is off and my prop back on!

There are some great tundra areas to land in the mountains behind my place. This is just one of them.
Image

Quite a few lakes up here have this color. I’m told the glacial silt is the cause. Sure is beautiful.
Image

This is a fabulous gravel bar area up in the mountains not too far from my place. Just me, the bears and the moose frequent it.
Image

Flying home I spotted a waterfall at the headwaters of a lake. Short landing area with no wind. I did entertain a guy who had riden his fat tire mountain bike to nearby for some fishing. He brought his iPad and filmed me as I tested the spot, landed and later took off. I suppose by now it’s on FB somewhere.
Image

The video from the last couple of flights. Gravel bars, tundra, and a waterfall at the headwaters of the lake.

Re: SQ2'n in Alaska

A good chance this is the last time Bob and I fly together this year so we headed to one of our favorite areas to do some more exploring.

I got to our rendezvous area bout 45 minutes before him so scouted around and found this beautiful beach. I first landed the little peninsula at the right side of the entrance, then did some more flying and came back and landed a sandy area in the middle.

As soon as Bob arrived we headed out and flew the coastline. Incredibly beautiful.
Image

We couldn’t make it any further as a marine layer cut us off. So we turned up a fjord looking for one last beach to visit and came across this one that had hundreds of Pink Salmon (Humpies) spawning.
Image

In short order the onshore breeze was blowing hard enough it started blowing my plane backwards -without me in it. Not wanting to be caught by the marine layer we headed home. One last stop at 5,000 feet then on to home.

Re: SQ2'n in Alaska

Someone told me the other day “only eight more weeks till snow”. Well that sucks. Especially since I’ll loose eight or nine days of those eight weeks driving the Alaska Highway up from Texas - again - in the same year (watch for the thread of this trip).

Anyway, got out a few days ago and shot some video and pics. Video will have to wait till I get back up here.

Re: SQ2'n in Alaska

Sunshine today so headed to fly some areas in the Kenai Fjords. Landed the same beach that Bob and I did a few weeks ago and there were still thousands of salmon spawning, dying, and dead. And again not a bear to be seen anywhere. Sure seems strange to me.
Image

On the way back home played on some gravel bars. Beautiful day to fly.

Re: SQ2'n in Alaska

Shot this video before I went down to the lower 48 and back. Excellent way to work on ground effect flight and precise touchdowns. And one wheeling on sloped beaches.

I never get tired of the area I call "Iceberg Bay". Not sure what it is that speaks to me so strongly here.
