Re: Suggestions for a Turbine Back Country

Here is one that was at Oshkosh a few years ago. Maybe the perfect plane.
1. train horn/whistle to scare off moose, etc before landing.
2. on board spray/smoke rig to lay down bug spray before setting up camp.
3 wilga style main gear for the big bumps.
4. the list of features goes on and on....

Re: Suggestions for a Turbine Back Country

I was asked to give a demo flight to a engineering flight test pilot for one of the French manufacturers some years ago in a float plane. We flew around, and landed at Jack Browns' in FL. He (the French engineer) was looking at a Comp Air 8 parked there. I watched him for some time, while he examined it very carefully.

I asked him what he thought of that airplane. His response: "How can I say zees....I would not even stand UNDER zees airplane if it were in flight".

He then gave me a tour of why.

It's the only way to balance a plane with that much tail and a lightweight turbine engine. You have to hang the turbine way out there on a longer moment.

Re: Suggestions for a Turbine Back Country

Ah, I see someone changed the post from "TURBiN" backcountry to "TURBINE" back country. I was tempted to say something or post a picture of off color nature. I could think of a few funny things to post and pictures to post to that word....hehe. Damn Jeff foxworthy..he has warped me for life with redneck off color humor.

Yeah, strange how they were able to avoid it in that turbine Maule pictured earlier in the thread.

That's a classic, I love it. But that's not a turban, it's a toque! :)

Unless you're referring to his penis gourd.

Re: Suggestions for a Turbine Back Country

I watched one of the turbine Maules on floats depart overhead one day a few years ago. All I can say is that beast took off and left the area with authority.

It's probably the only bush capable production turbine airplane that is remotely affordable. I know there's a couple of Super Cubs out there with turbine engines on them, but I doubt they can make as much usable hauling ability out of that turbine as the bigger Maule.

The turbine Sherpa can probably make use of the power real well too. But no idea if they are actually building and selling them yet.

Just an opinion, I have no personal experience with any of them.

That plane is based in Alpine Wy, about 35 miles from me. The owner, Bill Wieman is one class act and has more KOOL toys then any human should be allowed to have. IT is the only plane that could probably beat me in a short take off contest. Fuel burn in the turbine is quite high. If I remember correctly he plans for a fuel stop every 55 minutes. [-o<

Re: Suggestions for a Turbine Back Country

I thought Mr. Wieman sold the turbine at OshKosh....maybe not.
Fuel burn rate at cruise on that turbine is 21-23 gph if you don't get too agressive with it. Which is hard to do!! :D

Re: Suggestions for a Turbine Back Country

I believe that tri-gear turbine Helio had a Garrett not an Allison. At least that smile and prop look more Garrett to me.
There was one Allison Helio converted by Jim Perry in Washington that went to South America though I believe a 295.
Also the comment about an Allison powered Single Otter, I don't believe there is one. I think you are referring to the Garrett there as well.
