There is a video of a Husky tied down with the CLAW and it got pulled right out of the ground. Screw in anchors, wedges, flight tie's, etc...in a tornado and tied down in sandy soil...it does not really matter at that point.

From what I heard, the ones that worked really well and didn't pull out of the ground, pulled through the wings or tail.

Re: Sun-n-Fun 2011

When the winds are stong enough to push a DC-3 backwards accross wet ground until it's tail is in a ditch all bets are off with regards to the light aircrft.

Re: Sun-n-Fun 2011

Some video of the carnage. In the video, you can see two aircraft that used the Claw that didn't look like they moved. But location and proximity to the tornado/strongest winds is going to make a difference. But these were right out in front of the tent they were in and the wind was ripping.

Here is the Husky I mentioned earlier with the CLAW...check out the action on those control surfaces in the wind.

Re: Sun-n-Fun 2011

Looks to me like the tie down rope broke on that Husky. There's a snapping sound right before it starts rotating as well. Not sure if that's the rope breaking, but it looks like the rope failed before the anchor in this case.

I've had a few sleepless nights camping out in the midwest with the plane in high winds, but I can't even imagine what something like this would be like. Awful.

Edit: Never mind. I think towards the end when the camera zooms in you can see the claw thingy still dangling off the rope... Sorry.

I assume this is same the Husky... Cannot see tail # of second. People are lucky a plane did not come flying through their tent as they were hunkered down. Here one minute, gone the next. We should be so thankful for all we have...

You know, I was thinking the same thing. As wet and miserable as it would have been, standing outside the tent looking upwind would probably have been the safest place to allow you to ninja-dance out of the way of a tumbling aircraft. Probably is not pleasant to take a surprise tumbling CH701 in the back.

Re: Sun-n-Fun 2011

Great video footage, but really sad to see all the damage. So many planes, so much hard work, investment and time and money and aspirations. I hope nobody got hurt, and that those with the damaged planes can recover from this.

Re: Sun-n-Fun 2011

Went back today. They cleaned it up really quickly and everything went really smoothly today. Blue Angels did their first flight, F22 did its demo + a flyby in formation with a P51, and the night show was fun as always.

Talked to the guy at the Aviat tent. He said that they lost a total of 6 aircraft Thursday.

I'm really glad that there were no fatalities, and that they were able to clean up and go on with the show today. It was heart breaking to see all of those beautiful planes torn up.

***THREAD HIJACK***

Didn't you live in Murfreesboro just a short time ago? Are you the fellow that brought the yellow Supercub to our warbird event or am I getting you confused with someone else?

***HIJACK OVER*** we now return you to your regularly scheduled program.
