Tach
Avionics, airplane covers, tires, handheld radios, GPS receivers, wireless Wx uplink...any product related to backcountry aircraft and flying.
Can anyone weigh in on the value, function, performance; ya or nay of a given make or model of digital tachometer for which they have personal experience.

I really like the Horizon P-1000 that I have had since 1995. I think it's accurate and also tells you if a mag quits.

I like them as well, but I haven't been able to get a hold of them and they aren't available through spruce anymore. I'm wondering if they are still in business? I have 2 that i recently installed that aren't working he best, one has frozen a couple times, and the other bounces all over the place.

I have used the EI R1 along with the Horizon for on the order of hundreds of hours. Both are fine. The Horizon is so big for the size of display it has. The EI seems to bounce around less, I think it has more digital filtering and only shows it to 10's of RPMs so it feels more stable. The ring of LEDS around the perimeter does nothing for me personally, you will never look at it, but they don't bother me. Also takes up less panel space.
Personally, If I was buying either one, I'd just use the incentive to buy an EDM900. I find that I actually look at the digital needle/scale and not just the number on the JPI products. I think this is evidence that it's a good graphic interface nd it has the benefits of the analog tach displays. For example, on takeoff it's easy to pull the throttle back to 25" by seeing the needle plummeting down from 35" rather than watching four digits flip through.

They are still in business. Someone on another forum had trouble getting ahold of them as well, so I went by the shop to check if they were still there. The lady I spoke with said her mother had some health issues and it’s been a rough couple weeks. She said if you need something done just send it in with a note on what you need done and they’ll take care of it.

Just wondering if you've been by the shop lately? I've left multiple messages and sent emails with no response. I'm not a fan of sending primary engine gauges for customer planes away with the Hope's of getting them back when I can't get a hold of the company fixing them to get a timeline or an idea if others are having the same issue...

FDS T-30, 5 years, working fine. Also a Vans tach and transducer, at least 10 years, also working fine. Today I'd put it all towards an EI CGR-30.

x2 on the Horizon P-1000. The 185 has one when we purchased it.

Another vote for the Horizon. My IA had recommended the Horizon over some others I was considering, and I'm glad he did. I've had mine for several years now, and it works perfectly. When I first got it, I had trouble seeing the numbers--its display has a relatively narrow "window". They changed out the bezel for me at no charge for an angled version, and I further angled it upwards with some spacers when I reinstalled it. Good tach.
As for getting ahold of them, I suspect like any small boutique business, when the bosses are away, things shut down. If they were having family health issues, that makes sense. But my experience with their responsiveness to the bezel issue tells me that they're good folks.
