Excuse my ignorance, but what is the purpose of the tailpipe extension?

Mine barely exits the bottom of the cowl.I thought it might help the cleanliness of the cowl and flap.

Re: tail pipe extension 182h

I got one from kenmore some years ago. It's not legit but . . . . it keeps the soot off the cowl flap and rt gear spring.
You can put a floatplane muffler on a 182. It has a longer pipe with a gusset for the added slipstream drag.
