tailwheel endorsement in the denver area

I've found a few larger schools, but was wondering if any of ya'll might be able to help. I'm not ready yet, still working on my PPL (recently soloed). But like having my ducks at least in sight, if not lined up. I'm flying out of BJC now, but would be willing to travel a bit. I do not have access to a tailwheel AC at this time.

Also, I would really really really like just to go up in a TW, its been years since I have. I expect I'll be in the market for a pa-20/22 or possibly a Stinson in the next couple years.

I did look in the knowledge base and there isn't anything local listed, so I'm hoping the info is just outdated?

Re: tailwheel endorsement in the denver area

Elite Aviation in at KLMO is the Boulder area tailwheel place. They have 3 Citabrias (7GCAA, 7GCBC, 8KCAB) ranging from $100 to $180/hour and do everything from primary training to advanced aerobatics. Not a lot (or any?) backcountry type training. I got my tailwheel endorsement there. Doedo Schipper is really well known, highly recommended, and a good guy. I used Al Gordon due to scheduling and he was good as well. In general, their instructors seem to come from the aerobatics background, although that could be painting too broad a brush. I enjoyed my training there, although it was limited to 7 hours to get my endorsement.

Edit: Right now I'm trying to figure out some brake issues but once I'm back in the air, I'd be willing to take you up for a flight in my 180 if you're interested.

The information there is based on what people send me, so if you find someone good, please report back. Thanks.

I've flown with a couple TW instructors at KAPA with Aspen Flying Club in their Citabria(s). They also have an Xtreme Decathlon you can rent if you really want to have some fun flying in ways your instructors normally tell you not to.

Tim sale. Sounds familiar, is he out of front range? Does some mtn flying classes? I think I took one with him earlier this year.

Asa, that would be awesome. I know I can't afford a 180, but it's still a dream. Where ya based out of?

KBDU. Although it's a small world once you're in the air. I pass by Ted's hangar regularly getting the cheap gas at 18V.

Anyone hear from Dave Younkin in a while? If he is still around, he is a wealth of knowledge, especially in Skywagons. (Front Range area)

Re: tailwheel endorsement in the denver area

I received my tailwheel from Specialty Flight Training at KBDU. They have a 7GCAA and are very safety oriented.

My regular CFII (for IPCs, BFRs, etc.) for the last 14 years is Jer Eberhard. Excellent instructor, in anything with one fan out front, including tailwheels. He's part owner of a nice C140 (also part owner of a C206), but I don't think he instructs in it. jerslash.net. He lives in Fort Collins, but he flies out of most anywhere along the Front Range.

I've been wondering about Dave Younkin as well. Can't find his contact information anywhere out there. A good portion of my Skywagon "instruction" came from a friend of mine who was taught to fly his 180 by Dave. It would be awesome to fly with him if he is still instructs. Maybe someone at the CO division of wildlife would know?

Otherwise, TW instructors I've liked:

Jer Eberhard (FNL)

John Good (APA)

Re: tailwheel endorsement in the denver area

I'm going to resurrect this thread. I'm soon to be getting a Cessna 180, but need to get the tailwheel endorsement. I live in Colorado Springs and am looking for someone who can get me trained up. Are the names that are thrown around in this thread still valid?

(2) of the (3) Citabrias are still flying with Elite at KLMO, and I expect Al and others are still instructing. (the GCAA was looped and totaled)

Re: tailwheel endorsement in the denver area

If you don't mind traveling, Bush Air in CalNevAri. CC is a great teacher. Training will be in a 170B(unless you supply your own plane). You can stay there until you complete your endorsement. Very intense training sessions but you WILL walk away with an endorsement if you have PPL already. Plus, the guy is a master chef!......

MountainMatt on here, IIRC he doesn’t train in his Wagon but would likely train you in yours.

Solid dude.
