Re: Teledyne LED taxi/landing lights

I know zip about LED lights, but some 10 years ago, I had HID lights installed on my P172D, replacing both the landing and taxi lights in the wing. I learned really quick that "bright" isn't everything--proper aiming is critical. Mine are incredibly bright, but until I aimed them properly, they were no better than the original lights for lighting the way. It took several night landings before I was satisfied--and it's an annoying process for the landing light (the taxi light is easy--just point the airplane at a hangar some distance away, and adjust it). For the landing light, though, it's land, take off the cover, adjust the landing light a little, reinstall the cover, then try it again. It took 6 landings before I was satisfied, but I haven't had to re-aim either light since then.

Morning Cary
That is why I am interested in the spread of the light pattern

Hey David
These lights are lookin pretty good to me too.
If you have questions I would suggest calling and trying to get Albert. He seems to be the most knowledgable of any I talked with. They make several different bulbs. The brightest 3400 lumens. Two different styles. 60* and 10* I'm gonna try one with the 10*. (62010 R Plus) You can buy them on Amazon for $208.00 and free shipping.
Thanks for bringin them to my attention.

Awesome Gary. Thanks for the info. I'll be looking for a PIREP if you fly with them before I get a set installed.
You are going with 10* for both taxi and landing? Or just going to try it in the landing light to see how good it is before buying another?

Re: Teledyne LED taxi/landing lights

I ended up going with the 10* for recognition while flying and the 60* for taxi, both for landing at night.

Re: Teledyne LED taxi/landing lights

I was looking at LED lights as well, and was trying to decide on what degree of beam width to purchase.

On a Maule however, the landing lights are set back in the leading edge of the wings about 8 inches, so even if I purchased a wider beam 'taxi' light, much of that wider beam would not make it out of the housing.

This makes me lean towards just purchasing two thin beamed 'landing' LED's.

Any thoughts on this?

Re: Teledyne LED taxi/landing lights

My primary concern with these lights is for recognition. For the most part another aircraft will have to be at or near my altitude to be a threat..
According to my math the 10* beam 1000' away yields a 167' beam spread. I think that is probly sufficient. The wider the angle, the quicker the reduction in brightness, atleast with the Rigid lights.
Kindof a work in progress. We'll see how it actually performs. I will used the diffused(60*) with the 10* beam for landing and taking off to take advantage of the wider beam pattern. These beams are the same degree in all directions. Not all these lights have the same patterns.

Re: Teledyne LED taxi/landing lights

Of course, you pretty much need a spot, i.e., narrow beam light for the landing light, in order to light the area of the runway where you're going to land as well as light up far down the runway while you're carrying some speed, whether landing or taking off. That's part of why it's such a pain in the neck to aim. The wider beam for taxiing and recognition makes sense and isn't near the hassle to aim.

Since my airplane is a trike, the landing light actually points down a bit when taxiing, because of the angle of attack of the wing while on final. With a tail dragger, the properly aimed landing light might be closer to horizontal.

Re: Teledyne LED taxi/landing lights

I got the lights in and like the 10* beam, and not so much on the 60*. I didn't see it being $200.00 brighter than the GE bulb that was in there before. It seems to have lost a lot of the intensity with the diffusion.. The 10* beam could be seen miles away during the daytime. I like that.
