Re: The Kid Who Steals Planes

The least the little A*Wipe could do is learn how to LAND the frigging airplanes instead of ruining them.

HEY PUKE! If you're reading this, at about 50 feet you start the flare! (You know, dipshit, pull back on the yoke to slow the damned thing down). Look down the runway instead of at the runway.

If you're going too fast start your flare about 300 feet, just keep pulling that yoke back, farther, farther... and wait for it to settle onto the runway.

Perhaps if this punk stole your plane and crashed it you wouldn't be so stuck. :o

You misapprehend me, friend. Of course I feel for the victims, I'd be both heartsick and homicidal if it was my plane.

I'm just bemused that this kid has thus far evaded x number of cops and various feds across the entire country and is now hopping the islands. These are the guys supposed to be looking out for terrorists and they can't find a 19yo kid who is leaving a mile wide trail.

As far as any book/movie goes, US law says he can't profit, but any deal might allow the victims to recover at least financial losses although the feeling of being robbed never goes away..

I work pediatric psych, so yeah, I feel for the kid. I wouldn't entrust a plastic plant to his so-called parents. It is pretty self-evident that he needed intensive help at an early age and never received it.

Also, I was headed for nowhere but jail and and early grave until the Marines and later the love of my good wife saved my ass.

He needs to take the fall, do the time, and hopefully, grow up.
But wishing a life sentence of prison rape on this guy as some posters have...
Not very morally defensible in any faith.
And I know most of you folks are people of faith.
Anybody who can say it and mean it has never had a friend or relative or kid in trouble...or been in trouble themselves.

I suppose nobody here has ever bent or broke a law, or helped cover for someone who did. None of you guys ever did a thing wrong? More kosher than a rabbinical convention, eh? First stone anyone?
If you witness a crime and don't report it, then you are part of it too... How many of you guys would report a violation on a friend. Remember when bottle to throttle meant using the hand holding yr drink to adjust power. ... Ever help a guy behind on payments or going thru a divorce hide a plane temporarily.. or permanently...lie about knowledge of a friend's whereabouts, receive too much change or benefited from some sort of underpayment mistake and kept the money, fuzz the taxes...?
C'mon, half you guys wouldn't give a fed the time unless he had a warrant and you'd still lie and make for the boonies first chance. Filling out a dog license sets off a 20 minute rant about encroaching fascism.

As for the plane thefts, I be crying. I'd also be beating myself up for not having taken some ordinary precautions. Prop locks, control locks, heck 20-foot of chain and a masterlock be what, 20-30 bucks at home depot.
B4 somebody says, I shouldn't have to lock my stuff, people shouldn't steal. I know that, rule number 8 and all that.
I also know a padlock was among the first items I got in boot camp and woe betide anyone leaving a lock unsecured. You would definitely receive the DI's undivided attention and counseling.
As the DI said, some people steal and locks keep honest people honest.
Leaving an aircraft unsecured is like leaving a giant pile of money on the ground unattended.
Then crying "Somebody stole my big pile of money. I left it here last night tied with these 3 ropes. It has my name on it. Nobody should have taken it."
"You're right, nobody shoulda stole it, but ya didn't exactly protect it." Ever say something like that to yr kids over a coat or sneakers or sportscards or matchbox car or video game. We raised our boys, I know I've said it. Pretty much the premise behind insurance premiums...

At least 10% of you, if ya saw this kid would give him a kick in the butt, and a job offer to make amends, and then pray over him. And another 10% would give him a kick in the butt, $500 and a ride to the next island. I know at least a few of you guys have a pretty checkered past. Not everybody moves to the Yukon simply for the fresh air.

So as an old relatively religious USMC vet who votes mostly Republican and works with way too many damaged kids I feel I can say while he needs to get caught, some of the comments are way over the top.

Those who too willingly advocate the noose should be as willing to wear it.

I will now remain silent while still standing on my soapbox in order that anyone wishing to pelt me with fruit may do so.

Good flying to all.

Not a good place to hide from the law, but certainly a good place to hide from the rest of the world... Not that I would know anything about that :^o

NASSAU, Bahamas – Police in the Bahamas say they have caught the teenage U.S. fugitive known as the "Barefoot Bandit."

A police official says 19-year-old Colton Harris-Moore was arrested Sunday morning on the northern island of Eleuthera. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the official was not authorized to speak publicly about the case.

The official said police expect to fly Harris-Moore within hours from Eleuthera to Nassau, the capital of the island chain off the Florida coast.

Island police have been searching for the wily fugitive since he allegedly crash-landed a stolen plane on nearby Great Abaco Island a week ago.

He has been on the run from American law enforcement since escaping from a Washington state halfway house in 2008.

Woohoo!!! Hope they are finding the biggest book they can to throw at him. I guess that makes me an 80 percenter. Any chance they could just keep him...although I think that would be more appropriate if it would have been Mexico that had caught him.

Re: The Kid Who Steals Planes

Don't get your hopes up for a "lock him up and throw away the key" disposition.

With his age, no history of violent crimes, and being potty trained too early by his mommy, you'll see him out of prison in a hurry. Got a feeling he'll be in the news for a long, long time until some home owner blasts him with a shotgun, or he's in the wrong state at the wrong time and gets snagged by a three-strikes law.

But that'll be decades, and millions of tax dollars for his legal fees later.

Re: The Kid Who Steals Planes

Although my heart parallels the thoughts of NEALKAS in his earlier post, my sense of humor ends up squarely in the gutter.

Colton was formerly the BareFoot Bandit, now he will be the B.F. Bandit. Same initials, just a prison twist to them.

I am glad they captured him before he killed someone on the ground and brought more negative exposure to general aviation.

Re: The Kid Who Steals Planes

For those who've asserted in the news that his crimes were not "crimes against persons" (BS in my opinion), the AP article on him this AM said that he got caught in someone's house in SD by the owners, who chased him into the basement, and confronted him. He apparently pointed a laser at the homeowner, and told him he had a gun and he'd shoot. The homeowner backed off and the kid escaped. It's not known whether he really had a gun or a laser pointer, but in most states, that constitutes assault, and certainly qualifies as a crime against a person.

I'll bet the butthead never serves a day in a real prison. Mommy and the legal system will get the poor little misunderstood twerp out with a slap on the hand.

Maybe next time he points a laser at a homeowner, the homeowner will lase HIM with a load of buckshot.

Oh, and the movie rights to the kid's life have been sold to a Hollywood company....

Hope he get his far share of jail time and the help he needs to unscrew what his mother did to him.
Unfortunitly that wont happen. The best punishment would be no movie, no news stories, no mention of the B F Bandit ever again. Unfortunitly other screwed up kids along with Hollyworst
will turn him into some big hero.

Re: The Kid Who Steals Planes

I disagree with the slap on the wrist... this dumbass is going to be locked up for a long time. And this story doesn't have a tragic ending (like McClandless), so I doubt the book and movie will make it very far. (Or so I hope!)

I can't stand thieves!

Barefoot Bandit' nabbed after 2 years as fugitive

By JUAN McCARTNEY and MIKE MELIA (AP) – 12 minutes ago

NASSAU, Bahamas — For two years he stayed a step ahead of the law — stealing cars, powerboats and even airplanes, police say, while building a reputation as a 21st-century folk hero. On Sunday, Colton Harris-Moore's celebrity became his downfall.

Witnesses on the Bahamian island of Eleuthera recognized the 19-year-old dubbed the "Barefoot Bandit" and called police, who captured him after a high-speed boat chase, Bahamas Police Commissioner Ellison Greenslade said at a celebratory news conference in Nassau, the capital.

Greenslade said shots were fired during the water chase but he did not say who fired them. He also said Harris-Moore was carrying a handgun that he tried to throw away.

Another senior police official, however, said police fired to disable the motor on the suspect's stolen boat, and that Harris-Moore threw his gun in the water. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the case, also said that police recovered a laptop and a GPS locator from the suspect.

Police flew Harris-Moore in shackles to Nassau. True to his nickname, the teen with close-shorn hair was shoeless as he walked off the plane wearing short camouflage cargo pants, a white long-sleeved shirt and a bulletproof vest.

Harris-Moore is blamed for several thefts in the Bahamas in the week since allegedly crash-landing a stolen plane there, and Bahamian authorities said he will be prosecuted for those crimes before the start of any U.S. extradition proceedings.

The 6-foot-5-inch Harris-Moore had been on the run since escaping from a Washington state halfway house in 2008. He is accused of breaking into dozens of homes and committing burglaries across Washington, as well as in British Columbia and Idaho.

He is also suspected of stealing at least five planes — including the aircraft he allegedly lifted in Indiana and flew more than 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) to the Bahamas, despite a lack of formal flight training.

Some of his alleged actions appeared intended to taunt police: In February, someone who broke into a grocery store in Washington's San Juan Islands drew cartoonish, chalk-outline feet all over the floor.

Through it all, his ranks of supporters grew. Some of his more than 60,000 Facebook fans posted disappointed messages Sunday, while others promoted T-shirts and tote bags with the words "Free Colton!" and "Let Colton Fly!"

Even someone in the Bahamas had mixed feelings about his arrest.

"I feel like it would have been good if he got away because he never hurt anybody, but then he was running from the law," said Ruthie Key, who owns a market on Great Abaco Island and let Harris-Moore use her wireless Internet connection July 5.

"He seemed very innocent when I spoke with him at the store. I don't think he'd hurt anybody," Key said.

Island police had been searching for the teen since he allegedly crash-landed the plane on Abaco, where he was blamed for at least seven burglaries. The search expanded to Eleuthera after police there recovered a 44-foot (13-meter) powerboat reported stolen from Abaco.

Police said several people reported seeing the teenager Wednesday night in the waters between Eleuthera and Harbour Island, a nearby tourist destination known for its art galleries, but did not know about the Barefoot Bandit until after discovering a series of break-ins the next day. Harris-Moore's mistake was to return to the same area.

James Major, who rents cars on Eleuthera opposite Harbour Island, said a witness on his side of the channel reported a sighting of Harris-Moore to police early Sunday. He said locals had been on the lookout since the fugitive was blamed for trying to steal four boats and breaking into two buildings at the ferry landing.

"He might have been dangerous to the public," Major said. "Everybody is glad he was caught."

Greenslade said the high-speed chase began around 2 a.m. Sunday after police received tips from members of the public that the suspect was on Harbour Island.

The chase ended in the waters off the Romora Bay Resort & Marina on Harbour Island, where security director Kenneth Strachan reported seeing a young man running through the bush barefoot with a handgun, according to Anne Ward, who manages the property.

"When Kenny spotted him, he had a knapsack over his shoulder and a gun and he was yelling, 'They're going to kill me. They're going to kill me.' He was running up the dock," Ward said.

Ward said the fugitive ran back to the water and stole another boat but ran aground in the shallows, where police shot out his engine.

"At one point, the boy threw his computer in the water and put a gun to his head. He was going to kill himself. Police talked him out of it," Ward said.

Police declined to comment on whether Ward's account was accurate.

Harris-Moore is a skilled outdoorsman who honed his abilities growing up in the woods of Camano Island in Puget Sound about 30 miles (50 kilometers) north of Seattle.

Harris-Moore's mother, Pam Kohler, has said that he had a troubled childhood. His first conviction, for possession of stolen property, came at age 12. Within a few months of turning 13, he had three more.

Kohler has defended her son, saying the allegations against him are exaggerated. She previously told the AP that she hoped he would flee to a country that doesn't have an extradition treaty with the United States.

Reached early Sunday at her Camano home, Kohler said she'd heard the news about the arrest but had no comment.

Victims of the crimes Harris-Moore is accused of were happy to see him in custody.

"These people that support him, they've never been violated by having him break into their homes or businesses," said Joni Fowler, manager of a cafe on Orcas Island north of Seattle where Harris-Moore is accused of taking as much as $1,500. "Just knowing he has a huge network of supporters makes me really worry about the state of this country."

Fowler said she hopes Harris-Moore's arrest and upcoming court appearances will pop his mystique and fame — "once everybody figures out he's no God."

Emily Langlie, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Seattle, said that once Harris-Moore faces charges in the Bahamas, her office would seek to extradite him to Washington state and coordinate with local jurisdictions about how his case would proceed.

"There are obviously many jurisdictions that would like to prosecute him," she said.

Shauna Snyder, a private investigator on Whidbey Island near Camano, said she set up a legal defense fund for Harris-Moore at the request of his mother. She said that although she didn't know how much had been raised so far, the fund has been getting donations.

Associated Press Writers Gene Johnson in Seattle and Anna Jo Bratton in Phoenix contributed to this report.

Re: The Kid Who Steals Planes

As much as I hate to admit it I hope mtv is correct and he slips throug the cracks this first time. The Hollywood company that bought the rights will pay the asshole a ton of cash and then all the aircraft owners whose planes were stolen and crashed can sue his ass for every penny they lost. By the time they and all them others get through with him he will be a broke SOB. !!! Then we can pray for a suicide to save taxpayers any more public funds to chase him around.

Ben...............
