Re: Think the 185 Float Prop is Loud, Worst Prop Ever!

"Unlike standard propellers that turn at subsonic speeds, the outer 24–30 inches (61–76 cm) of the blades on the XF-84H's propeller traveled faster than the speed of sound even at idle thrust, producing a continuous visible sonic boom that radiated laterally from the propellers for hundreds of yards. The shock wave was actually powerful enough to knock a man down; an unfortunate crew chief who was inside a nearby C-47 was severely incapacitated during a 30-minute ground run.[17] Coupled with the already considerable noise from the subsonic aspect of the propeller and the T40's dual turbine sections, the aircraft was notorious for inducing severe nausea and headaches among ground crews.[11] In one report, a Republic engineer suffered a seizure after close range exposure to the shock waves emanating from a powered-up XF-84H.[18]"

If you are in the market to reduce noise on your 727, give FedEx a call...

Frankly, I wish I could buy something for my airplane like those tube mufflers in Europe. Not a big fan of huge noise, especially in the backcountry.

It’s long gone. Not sure what year it was moved, I believe it was before the old terminal closed.

YouTube has a couple of videos of the plane. The text there says that the plane's noise caused people to faint, vomit, become slightly deaf , and reputedly soil themselves. Enjoy!!

This last video is for the adolescent humor centers in many of our brains

I couldn't disagree more! I personally find it one of the most irritating noises I've ever heard. Sure, go for it where you need to turn all that hp and backcountry swagger into performance to get out of a short strip. But when I hear some clown taking off from a 3000'+ sealed strip and deafening everyone in a 2 mile radius I feel like throwing a chock into their prop next time I see it idling on the ramp...

Courtesy dictates pulling the prop back a few rpm immediately after takeoff. Maybe it's the aeronautical equivalent of those muppets who drive their fully sik honda civics with the mean as doof doof pounding out

Perhaps this is not the right forum to air my views on this!!!

You misunderstood me - I thought my comment might go over some heads. The uPpERcaSe/LowErcAsE font denotes sarcasm in some (fairly immature) parts of the Internet.

We’re in total agreement. I get steamed when I see people make this comment - and I see it all the time on Facebook. It’s like, no, dummy, that’s not the sweetest sound in the backcountry. That’s the sound of the hikers, river runners, and eco warriors lodging noise complaints and teeing off to the Forest Service on GA in the backcountry.

Haha! Gotcha! My internet time is primarily spent on sites with pictures only, so I missed the sarcastic font
