Thinking of moving. Researching various states

I have lived in California since 1945. I am aware of what is required in this state to own a plane. It is personal property tax of about 1% of airplanes value. In Oregon there is no personal property tax on Boats or airplanes. In Washington if you move to that state you have to pay a use tax of about 8% (I think) just to bring in an old 60 year old plane that you have owned for 5 plus years.

A question for you Idaho pilots, what should I expect in your state if I were to relocate there.

We don’t want you here. Only kinda kidding. [emoji6]

No annual tax on the plane if you register it every year. Registration is based on gross weight ($0.03 per pound of gross weight). If you don’t register the tax commission will send you a bill for 6% of market value “use tax”.

Re: Thinking of moving. Researching various states

I’d call Washington Department of Revenue if you are serious about Washington.

EDIT Use tax is due for new residents. Didn't know that. I'm still under the impression it is a delta of what was paid for your current state vs Washington's rates.

Use tax is also based on first place of use. Make damn sure you fly into Dallesport airport first, and document it. Klickitat county has among the lowest tax rates in the state. It saved me about $3000 by carefully following the rules.

The Eastern side of Washington state is dry and fewer people. Some place like Desert Aire could be very nice if desert is your thing.

Hangars are not bad depending on where you go. The treasure valley would be the highest. here is the magic valley not bad at all.

You could always move back near Avery Point? You pay sales tax once when you buy a plane. No yearly tax and no tax on aircraft parts.

Re: Thinking of moving. Researching various states

In case you are thinking about popping over to Nevada: No State taxes on income nor personal property. A caveat: State is turning purple, controlled politically by Las Vegas and Reno so who knows what is to come tax-wise, even in the highly conservative ranching rural counties like mine.

Counties make their own rules and Douglas County (Carson Valley, Minden, South Lake Tahoe) taxes old airplanes around 1 percent of value. I am awaiting my first tax bill on the 185. They had no reference to my previous airplane’s value (obscure warbird) and I was able to work out a deal, so to speak. My Husky worked out to the 1 percent rule.

There is apparently a sliding scale as a pal who has long owned both a Turbo Arrow and high-value sailplane pays much less than me.

Sorta.
If you bought your airplane in Calif, or registered it in Calif,
and paid sales (use) tax on it at that time,
I think you're exempt from paying it again if you move here with it.
Not sure of the annual tax counts--
isn't that actually called a "registration fee"?

WA "use tax" is the same as a sales tax, and figured at the same rate.
In my county, that's 9%.
It is charged on fair market value, aka blue book,
NOT on purchase price.
WA Dept of Revenue actually has an aircraft blue book.
But allowances are made for things like high time engine, old or missing paint, no radios, etc etc.
4 years ago, I successfully knocked $10-15K off the taxable value of my 180 this way.

You want to move to Eastern Washington.

As far as any BS tax http://www.decorps.com

Register the plane to your Delaware corparation, no tax.

Also no state income tax. Big plus.

Only minus is politics on the wet side of the state spilling over the Cascades, but this occurs in OR and CA as well.

Our governor is a big of a ecomentalist but so far we have been OK.

Every place has its assets and liabilities, no place is perfect.

Wyoming. Taxes may vary county by county but I don't think so. Whenever I renew the registration, I get a letter from the county and they ask if the plane is used for business or for family pleasure and recreation. If you do both, you designate the percentage that is used for business. I am only for pleasure so I am not taxed any for my plane. Don't know the rates if you use for business. But watch where you go as the winds can be nasty in some areas, especially in the winter.
