Re: Tiz the Season... Intro to Ski Flying

Mike has a great article in the knowledge section on Ski flying .https://backcountrypilot.org/knowledge- ... ski-flying As noted in the video a Tail ski is a real benefit in deep snow. It is a Night and Day difference trying to turn a heavy tail plane in the snow especially by hand. Whenever you land the friction between the snow and skis causes the snow to melt a bit, sliding the plane back a few feet when you first land helps prevent that early freeze in. I just finished putting my 2500A Federal Wheel Skis on yesterday.

Based on the size of those "skis", perhaps a more appropriate title is "Skate Flying 101", although perhaps suitable for the North Jersey Bush

I need to get a plane that I can ski fly with again. I miss it.

Sometimes I miss it and sometimes I don't, -40C en-route to 90 North in about 1992. That's Ward Hunt Island in the background the most northerly piece of land in Canada.

Kinda like asking someone who had to ditch off the coast of Greenland if they miss float flying :).

That’s very cool (no pun intended). I’ve heard and read stories from folks that flew for Borek up there. Certainly a different world.

Yes, minus 40 has a way of taking the shine off flying of any kind, as well as a lot of other things....

A question: What's the only good thing about -40?

Answer: You don't have to convert, and that's the ONLY thing good about -40.

Re: Tiz the Season... Intro to Ski Flying

You beat me to it MTV; I was going to reply to the -40C, "good thing it wasn't -40F"
I fondly recall flying out of Eielson at those temps in the A-10 after we sat for weeks due to an unrelenting cold snap. Leadership finally waived our normal low temp restriction (-30 as I recall) and off we went. Good to be flight lead as we were conning on the taxiway. Runway was IMC after each takeoff due to the cons and with little to no wind, it took a bit to dissipate. Good times, and at those temps, even better to be running turbines for God and Country.

My day on skis yesterday consisted of two phases.

1. The work

2. The prize

Wowzer! Incredible.

Putting the skis on today, so it’s pretty likely our snow will melt now…
