Re: Trip plan; western WA to Denver

The wild geese roam free in the PRB...

I was told the gates would stay open, too.... that lasted about a month - now the gates are closed every time i go over there... Next up the codes will change every week. then you guys will have to apply for permission to get a badge to access your hangars

On a positive note I hear you will be getting a credit card machine for 24hr access to mogas! That'll be fabulous.

Re: Trip plan; western WA to Denver

Lots of hail in the Denver area these days. Any suggestions regarding parking the plane at KLMO? Covered parking? A hangar to rent for a few days??

Jeff, it was nice meeting you & your wife today.
Here's some ideas for remote-ish places to land & camp, they may or may not be along your route.
WA: Rogersburg, Lower Monumental, Lower Granite, Little Goose
OR: Owyhee, Memaloose, Minam, Red's Horse Ranch, Chukar Flats, Lands Inn, Alvord Desert
Have fun on your trip and fly safe.

It was our pleasure. Thanks for your help. I dare say, a friendly guy I may never meet.
We are camping the first night at Owyhee. The second night I want to be within a couple of hours striking distance of KLMO. I'll look at the places you listed and see if any of them fit.
Once again, Thank you.

Elite may offer some hangar space.

The weather has finally turned nice around these parts. This photo was taken taxiing out to 11 on Sunday at KLMO (looking west) and is what you get to look forward to:

Re: Trip plan; western WA to Denver

Monday flying back from La Garita over La Veta Pass and up the Front Range, Molly dog and I were tossed about a bit until about Colorado Springs, but things stayed relatively smooth from then on to Greeley at 9500'--and this was mid afternoon! So maybe things have calmed down for awhile. Hard to tell--today's all low clouds and a little rain here in Ft. Collins, but nothing dramatic.

Re: Trip plan; western WA to Denver

Hey everyone! I'm alive! I know, I never would have thought it possible. Thanks for all of the guidance! I arrived at KLMO this morning safely. Noticed some unusual oil leakage last night at Rawlins Municipal so I checked it into the shop at Elite today. Unfortunately, business makes it so that I was not able to stay around there so I just have to trust. Anyone who saw the video I posted of my right mag about to fall off shortly after my last annual knows I'm not quick to trust strangers with my life :)
Now to see if I can figure out how to post a video from our landing at 28U Owyhee Reservoir state park.

Brian Pickerell is the FBO manager now and is a great guy. They will take good care of you.

It must be your fault it is raining now. You brought it with you! :)

I can't wait to see the video from 28U. It looks awesome from Google Earth views...

Re: Trip plan; western WA to Denver

Sorry for the crap weather again today. This has been the wettest few months I have ever experienced out here (~20 years now).

Out of curiosity, do you know how many hobb hours it took for you to get out here? At what cruise speeds on average would you say? Just curious how real-world vs planning-worlds actually line up...

Right...this weather just isn't gonna work for me. I have this unrealistic dream that I can leave KLMO Saturday afternoon and get close to Salt Lake. Then fly all the way home on Sunday. Otherwise I don't imagine I'll make it home Sunday.

As far as flight time goes, it was really pretty close. I flight planned for 115 mph and it had me at about ten hours total time. My ground speed in cruise flight was 125 to 140 most of the way. I deviated from the original plan slightly, made three fuel stops, and maneuvered to look at cool stuff from time to time and came it pretty close to ten hrs TACH TIME. I don't have a Hobbs.

Now please arrange calm skies for Saturday afternoon so I don't have to sleep on the grass at KLMO. Thanks

Re: Trip plan; western WA to Denver

Saturday could be fine. But I'd worry about overdevelopment if you wait too long in the day with all the moisture hanging around.

If you want a nice spot to camp, Glendo Reservoir (76v) is a nice grass strip to the north. If you end up in Longmont, I can show you around a bit.
