Tundra Tire STC from Seaplanes North (Grove/Desser)

Have you modified your aircraft? STC? STOL Kit? Major rebuild from just a data plate?

Re: Tundra Tire STC from Seaplanes North (Grove/Desser)

I lost about 7knots from 136 to 129 lean of peak on 8.50x6. To answer the other question, the stc is for desser tubeless 29" tires, and grove 10" wheels and brakes. I think the package was about 4k.

The web site did not provide a price, but rather a notice that "These tires are on backorder". Which of course could mean tomorrow or next year. My guess is, it isn't a short wait, otherwise they wouldn't have that up on the website. MTV

Here's a link to the 850x10 smoothies, $340 a pop,
and nothing about being out of stock on this one either.

There's a similar discussion going on at the supercub site,
I was just looking at the Desser website as well as googling to try to find the 850x10 and/or 29x10 smoothies but no luck.
Can anyone point me toward pricing info?
A buddy of mine is running ABI 10" wheels & shaved 29x10 Airhawks,
these Desser tires might be a lighter, less expensive option if he ever wears out his Airhawks--
although that'll take some doing!

Looks like Desser has changed their website and some part numbers up... unable to find this package on there anymore :?

Thanks for posting those links.
A buddy of mine is running shaved 29" Airhawks,
either one of those Desser smoothies might be a good option at replacement time.

How much larger are the 29x10's than the 850x10's?
I see the price is about double.

I can't imagine needing more braking power than double puck Cleveland's on a 180.

Having run both, if I lived and flew were I was not landing in really rough off airport stuff I'd put the shaved 29s on and run them for the next decade. Knowing I'm going to be landing in the rough stuff on occasion, I love my 29" heavy tread Bushwheels and so does my airplane.

Absolutely nothing beats Bushwheels in the rough. Period. Yes, they are expensive, but so are airframes.

One of the very significant advantages to Bushwheels is that just about everything Airframes makes (not quit everything, but...) is also STCd. They don’t develop “stuff”, then expect someone else to provide approvals. So, they’re a one stop shop.

A while back, I ordered a set of their wheels and brakes for my 175. Day after I ordered, they called and said they screwed up. Airframes didn’t hold the STC for those brakes on the 175. So, they said by seperate mail, I’d be getting a copy of F Atlee Dodge’s STC to cover that installation. No charge. That’s the kind of company I like to deal with.

Now, I’m delighted that Seaplanes has worked hard to acquire these STCs. That’s hard work and costs $$$. Good for them, because there’s definitely a place for these tires and wheels.

The single biggest issue with Bushwheels is that they don’t tolerate a lot of pavement ops. And, a lot of us simply have no choice but use pavement regularly.

So, good for Desser and Seaplanes for developing and approving this stuff.

Seems like this setup fills a void in the market perfectly, and I hope it will make those damn Gar Aero adapters and shaved airhawks be a relic of the past.

I put 850's on my scout to deliver to the new seller and was abruptly reminded that bumps do actually exist on the earth. A year on 31" bushwheels will convince you that anything less than a full-on ditch is only an optical illusion.

A friend recently lost the motor in his 4 place experimental and put it in a swamp. He was on 31s and other than leading edges getting beat up taking out willows you'd have never known. Amazing how nasty the stuff was that those Bushwheels rolled over.

I have a scout in the shop that was on 31s and had an engine out (dont run good with only air in the tanks). I can't believe how much damage there is on the plane. Big tires are great, but you still have to fly appropriately to avoid damage...

Found it. Looks like they mistakenly put PA18 in the heading:
https://shop.desser.com/piperpa18wheelbrakekitcessna180/185/206w/1.539;axle/ecomm-product-detail/327274/

Those Grove 10 inch wheels look a LOT like the Airframes Alaska 10 x 10 wheels. I wondered about Desser's statement on their ten inch tires that they are to be used on Grove wheels.... Was wondering if the Grove 10 inch wheels were significantly narrower than Airframes, but looks close in the photo.

Desser obviously has someone who's not really very familiar with their products putting their stuff on the web site....."PA-18 Wheels/Brakes for Cessna 180/185"....

My friend, bush pilot and lodge owner in Alaska, that bought my previous 185 replaced the 26 Goodyear’s with these last year. Saw no significant speed difference but a huge increase in braking efficiency.

If I remember correctly The Grove wheels are one inch wider than the Airframes wheel used on the standard 35 in Bushwheels. Beringer wheels are also 1 inch wider and seem to do well on the 35 in Bushwheels. DENNY

IF only Desser made the 27 and 29 inch tires for 6” wheels.

Re: Tundra Tire STC from Seaplanes North (Grove/Desser)

Do these tires require an 337 and a field approval or do they have an STC? Anyone know if they fit on a standard Cleveland 8:50x6 wheel? Sorry for the silly question.

If that’s true, the Grove wheels would be about 9.5 wide, as compared to Airframes 10 inch.

The tires being discussed here use a ten inch wheel, hence the 29x10 designation. A six inch tire designation would end in 6.
