TX to AK-Driving-This Year-Again

Today I catch a smoker to Texas. Tomorrow I trade my i8 (a fun car but totally impractical for anything but sunshine and smooth pavement) for a X5 (all wheel drive much more practical) and Saturday I drive it back home to Alaska. Crazy huh.

I'm thinking I don't want to drive the exact route I did earlier this year, but instead go through prettier country. So here is a map of my proposed route. Comments and suggestions welcome. Oh, and I will post photos and such about this trip. Gonna be a whirlwind as I need to get back so I can go fish at Renegade's Alaska Rainbow Lodge.

Sounds not so fun. Wave as you go through Idaho Falls.

Drive safe! If you need anything as you come through the Layton, Utah area, just yell!

If it won't add much to your driving time (I don't think it will, but you'll have to calculate it), sidle east out of the Salt Lake area into western Wyoming, and go north from Cokeville on US 89 through Afton (home of the Husky factory) to Alpine and then along the east shore of Palisades Reservoir on US 26. It is one of the more beautiful drives anywhere.

And.... Check fire conditions and road closures in BC and Alberta when you get that way.

We bugged out of BC two weeks early on a couple month road trip because of the mess in western BC, and fires up by Lake Louise.

Well that bites! Sorry about your trip being cut short and thanks for the heads up. I sure hate the idea of going through the flat country again.

Wow...

Are back to back cruises around the world (in opposite directions) next? You are The Undisputed Backcountry "Iron Man" for 2017!

Might want to use this song in your next video! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_Man_(song)

I'm jealous (except I'm not a Beamer fan, too much $$$ for my budget). Get a 5' 2D light bar installed, the days are getting shorter. Keep alive and enjoy the freedom.

Always good to see another thread of adventure!!!

We did that exact route backwards when we drove South in '13. It was very pretty but no fires.

Have a good trip!

Looks good! Stop by quick when you drive through Hythe. We are right off the main hwy.

Re: TX to AK-Driving-This Year-Again

Ok I'm kind of a little embarrassed here. You see all I'm trying to do is get out of the crazy high i8 payments I'm making and get a SUV for Alaska and to be honest I really didn't pay any attention to the specs of the X5 - which isn't like me at all. I mean I'm a Motörhead. Well this X5 is actually an X5 M. So some higher trim level I'm thinking. Well yes, but also 567 HP, 0-60 in 3.8 seconds, top speed 160 mph. Holy smokes how did I miss that. That's crotch rocket speed. It's going to be like driving the i8 but in a SUV! All of sudden this road trip is starting to get interesting!

One item that may need special consideration is the X5's 22.4 gallon fuel tank. A 567HP engine uses fuel pretty fast. I would consider auxiliary fuel containers when you leave.

I’m going to carry two 5 gal cans with me and fill them in Whitehorse. Thanks for not letting me forget.

Re: TX to AK-Driving-This Year-Again

I'm planning on spending tonight, the first night of this road trip in my favorite city in the world, Santa Fe New Mexico. Tomorrow night will be in the Ogden/Salt Lake City area because Monday I need to visit a BMW dealer for the break in maintenance schedule. Speaking of which I thought you'd get a kick out of the break in instructions.

FYI, I-15 from northern Utah through Idaho Falls and beyond is going to be a zoo this weekend with the eclipse. As in, projected gas shortages, port a potties every mile, and an influx of a half a million people for the eclipse. Probably not a good weekend to venture through that stretch. Unless your break in instructions include long periods of idling and stop and go traffic![emoji12]
