Re: TX to AK-Driving-This Year-Again

Yeah, there are already porta pottis lined up on I-25 around here, so I'm told--I haven't ventured out to watch the moving parking lot yet. Fortunately I don't have to be on that road to get to my airplane!

I'll end up spending half of Monday at the SLC beemer dealership getting the 1200 mile service, probably see the eclipse from there. I'll definitely go NE out of town, thanks for the warnings

I'm afraid any major road heading north might be kind of a mess. Good luck! Sorry we will miss you.

Hopefully the eclipse will be over and most people headed the opposite direction going home. There were a bunch of folks on the Texas highways headed headed to watch but when I turned towards Santa Fe that was the end of that. Indian Market here this weekend. This is my best picture taken today.Image

Turns out it isn't true, yet. Mah Woman just had to see the string of porta-potties, and was disappointed that there were only 10, on either side of one of the exits north of Fort Collins by the Bud brewery--and traffic was normal. Of course, this is only Saturday night-----

The zoo was downtown--CSU kids are moving back this weekend, and the whole downtown was littered with 20-somethings.

Re: TX to AK-Driving-This Year-Again

The Idaho 511 app shows everything green right now and the traffic cams show the same thing. But like you said it's only Saturday night.

Got out of the BMW dealership with an oil change and whatever else they did and a nice shiny wash job so I could go kill more bugs.

Was in SLC when the eclipse hit, had the sunroof open and my iPhone camera pointed to the sun in hopes of recording a spectacular event. But it only got as dark as it does in a rainstorm. Crossed into Idaho and set the cruise control on 80+mph. Just as I figured three days of eclipse traffic was going home at the same time and it didn't take long till the traffic piled up to a full stop. Saw a guy with a backpack walking alongside the cars and handily passing them. :D Well dead stop traffic lasted for over 100 miles. All for an eclipse? Really? Think some folks need to get a hobby!

So there I am going 80 past Idaho Falls and grinning like the Cheshire Cat.

When all of a sudden we come to a full stop. WTH? Eventually we start crawling along. I gotta pee real bad. Fifteen miles and an hour later we come to the source, one lane closed for construction (with nothing being done of course).

Anyway hit Montana and snapped pics on the fly, this one of the Missouri River.

Just rolled in to Great Falls, hit the camp site and got out the Mountainhouse. I'm really getting pretty creative with mixing various dinners and coming up with something, "the sum of the parts" or something like that.

Phil, give me a call when you are getting close to Fort Nelson. Maybe we can catch up on your way through.

Re: TX to AK-Driving-This Year-Again

David was great to finally meet! And thanks for breakfast. Looking forward to watching your 206 build.

Rod good talking with you. Sorry I couldn't stop, to many road construction holdups.

Folks that's something to keep in mind when driving to Alaska. When I drove up in April there were not construction holdups and no gravel on the Alaska highway. This time of year there is lots of both. Two rock chips so far and I'm only in BC.

Dieter, thanks I appreciate it but already up at Toad River. Maybe next time. [emoji51]

Re: TX to AK-Driving-This Year-Again

The second chip sent out some spider legs, probably grow before I get home. Oh well, it is the Alaska Highway after all. :-)

It’s great to be in British Columbia. This is the amount of traffic (and people) I prefer.

If only I was in the SQ2 and had a flyrod! (or just the flyrod)

And to think that the Yukon and Alaska are even prettier then this. Wow.

Tonight finds me staying at Toad River. Roughly half way between Fort St John and Whitehorse. They’ve got everything here; a turf strip, car gas, a restaurant, convenience/tourist store, camp sites, rv sites and cabins. I was very surprised to see how nice the accommodations were when I open the cabin (shack) door. Defiantly recommend stopping here by car or by plane.

Whitehorse tomorrow!

Phil- You probably already know this, but keep your eyes open for Stone sheep in the area around Muncho Lake tomorrow. Thanks for sharing the trip pics.
