Ok, in an effort to stop all you "Shark Jumpers" I thought I would throw something out there that has me intrigued for some time. We all have user names and many of them have hidden meanings and such. I was just wondering if there were interesting or funny stories behind the name selection. I'll start with mine. One year at Johnson creek, my flying buddies and I were running low on groceries and Ice so I elected to fly to Mccall for the grocery and ice run. NOw heres the rediculous part. I had never had any experience with or used Dry Ice before, and when I saw dry ice at the super market I figured it would serve us better and last longer than frozen water, so I bought a bunch and hauled it back. I faithfully packed all the coolers with the "better" stuff and then flew off to Cabin creek for a days fishing. Next morning we were prepairing breakfast and the mornings cook went to get the eggs and bacon out of the cooler and found frozen solid eggs, balogna, milk and everything else in the coolers. After much laughter and criticism at my expense they began calling me "the Iceman" . So it has nothing to do with the top gun movie, or anything else daring or enviable.

Yikes!!! Not to mention that Dry Ice is a hazardous substance that should not be carried in a confined space (like a small plane). I used to use a lot of dry ice to collect biological samples for genetic analyses. We were regularly hauling it to remote field sites and shipping it via Cargo haulers. It always had to be declared as hazardous. A short flight would not be a problem but on long flights you might be in serious danger. CO2 (which is what dry ice is) can cause an involuntary deep breath...causing you to inhale more of it. I once nearly passed out when I entered a walk--in freezer containing a box with 70 lbs of dry ice. I involuntarily inhaled deeply and immediately walked back out. After that, I always let the cooler air out before walking in.

Oh yeah....the topic at hand...it is a nickname based on my last name.

Yeah I learned all this stuff about Dry ice after the dirty deed was done. Fortunately I carried the ice in coolers in the plane, and Mccall to JC is only about 20 minutes in a Tripacer. It figures. Every time I do something regarding the airplane it either turns out to be illegal or costly. #-o

Well my name, PIF_Sonic, came from two places. A few years ago I played a game on the internet called Rouge Spear. I used the name “Sonic” as a user name. “Sonic” came from my first law enforcement job as a Reserve. I keep my hair really short and one of the full time officers said I looked like Sonic the Hedge Hog, because my hair stood straight up. So that’s where “Sonic” came from, and it has stuck for my twelve years in law enforcement.

While I was playing Rouge Spear on the internet I met a guy who lives in AZ. We eventually became very close friends and are still close to this day. At the time it was a little weird to meet someone on the internet and have them be normal. One of the dispatchers where I work asked how the “Physco Internet Friends” were doing. So that is where PIF came from. So PIF_Sonic was born. My friend’s user name was PIF_Marcinko. So the names stuck. I guess it is a little weird.

My plane is a Baby Great Lakes so I figured that was as good a handle as any.

Marc,

Aviation in itself is not inherently dangerous
But to an even greater degree than the sea,
it is terribly unforgiving of any
carelessness, incapacity, or neglect.

bat443, I fly at night for an overnight package company, 443 at the time was my crew member identification number. The bat part comes from another pilot who would answer the crew room phone when we were on hot standby with "bat cave".

Mine is somewhat obvious. Was futr_alaskaflyer, but whan I moved up here it needed to change...so it was a play on the book title "Once and Future King" by TH White.

I figured once I leave Alaska I can keep the moniker since it will still be true.

I like to hunt and because my wife is in the Army, I have gotten to do so in many different places of this world. Hence WW (World Wide) hunter . The first site I ever registered on was a hunting site. So I just carried it to all the subsequent sites since.
But I am also airplane crazy so my emails are Im plane crazy. :)
