U.S.N. from '63 to '70. During which time I became a citizen of this great country. I am profoundly grateful for America and all it represents, and that my parents chose to immigrate here when I was a young lad.

I served from 1975-1981, but only in the reserves and always stateside. The Vietnam war had wound down when I entered the Army Artillery, and the last thing they needed was more junior grade officers on active duty. After graduating high in my basic officer artillery branch course, I was offered an active duty commission and a posting to Korea, but I declined and did the reserve gig. My lack of any experience in conflict zones means I don't mention my brief stint in the service. The best thing about my Army time was that my dad put his dress blues on and performed my commissioning ceremony. That healed some of the tension that had built up between us during my teen years. I had great respect for his service since he did time in both Korea and Vietnam. His time in Vietnam ultimately led to his death from myleofibrosis. That disease is linked to benzene exposure. Benzene is a key ingredient of Agent Orange. The veterans that have been sent into harms way can never be thanked enough for their service.

Sorry about your Dad, but that's a cool story. My Dad did my commissioning, also.

I'm a little late to the party but I also want to thank those that have served.

I'd like to add my thanks to those who have served. Truly, something that takes a lot of courage, and character. Also, I wanted to take a moment to share a link. Now, to preface this a little bit, we have a contributing writer at Disciples of Flight who grew up with the daughter of a WW2 Navy Pilot named Franklin 'Robbie' Robinson. She got to know him very well, and with Robinson's recent passing, provided us with an article that tells the story of his service during the war. It's a pretty incredible story, and, I feel, an appropriate memorial for one of the countless veterans who gave so much to the rest of us, and asked for nothing in return.

I appreciate the thanks, and the sacrifices of my brothers and sisters in the service.

I was a USAF JAG from 68-73, stationed first in Illinois and then in Anchorage, where I learned to fly. I had very little sacrifices, but many certainly did of my era. About the only sacrifice I can remember was being spit at (not on) in the Atlanta airport enroute to a TDY assignment, something that I think is much less likely to happen now. I am really glad that the antipathy that many held toward the military in the Viet Nam era seems to be a thing of the past. Perhaps the general population has finally learned that individual members of the military don't make policy, but they are required to carry it out.

Bottom line: Thanks to all who have served and who are serving, and God bless America!
